Then it becomes even more subjective. Offsides is the one call in the NHL that is black and white either it is or isn't. - Stripes77
I would actually argue that point.
Because now with this video review option, we're going to get into a grey area where player "X" is offsides by a few inches or less. Does that inch jump into the zone give the attacking team any extra benefit?.....heck No. An extra foot or more, definitely.
Refs were never meant to scrutinize an offsides call down to that slim margin of error, measured in inches or less, especially given the speed of the game now. |

This isn't a bad idea either. If the challenged "offense" occured more than (say) 20 seconds before the goal is scored, then it's deemed to not have been the cause of the goal, and there is no challenge available. - Der Kaiser
Eh, say a player gains the line (offsides) and holds onto the puck for more than 20 seconds and scores, it shouldn't have happened because the play was offsides. I don't think you can put a time limit on it. It is either you keep the challenge or get rid of it. |

that's kind of what i'm saying. Is there a limit to how far back in the play, it's reviewable? |

I like the challenge but not for offsides.
To me I can compare it to Baseball, yes you can challenge, but you cannot challenge pitches. You have a line judge whos only job is to watch the line and make that call. He was right there and made the call that he was onside. It did not affect the play becuase the goal happend a minute later. Some things are good for the game, again like pitches in baseball, offsides should not be reviewable. And i really hope they re visit this in the off season. Even if the panthers have that exact play i still hate the call and challenge. |

THe whole idea behind offsides being a penalty is it keeps guys from entering the offensive zone before the other team can get back and defend. The fact that the offsides player held the puck for 20 seconds means the defenders had a chance to get back and just suck.
It's consistent with the purpose of the rule. |

But that is not the rule. The rule doesn't state that its okay to be a few inches offsides. It doesn't matter if it gives them an extra inch or a foot, offsides is offsides. |

That's incorrect. If it was that way offsides would be called like it is in soccer. |

Agreed, it sucks because both goals were called back for that - not anything like the Sabres challenge last night for potential interference - but offsides is a rule that has no bias to it and I understand it.
But as was said, it's just annoying as hell when there are 2 guys on the ice whose job is mostly to watch for such an infraction and it was missed. |

There was a game during the playoffs last year I believe where Chicago scored a game winning overtime goal and the play was definitely offsides. Sometimes the linesmen can't get from one spot to the other quick enough to get a clear view. No, it's not super frequent, but it does happen. |

Too much gray area. The rule is a part of your body has to be touching the neutral zone or the blue line. Adding the in the air element is too much.
It's real easy to call offsides on TV, but believe me it is 1000000 times harder when you are on the ice fighting for a good sight line and trying to not get in the way of the play. |

also a good point.. i would assume having to have the skate on the ice makes that much easier. then you don't have to be on the line |

What is kind of crazy to me is...why do you enter the zone by clearing the far end of the blue line, yet when you are on offense and hold it in that zone, you have until the back end of the line to keep it in?
Keep in mind, I've never played more than floor hockey in gym, so... |

So the blue line is apart of the zone the puck was last legally played. So if its in the neutral zone you have to fully cross the blue line and visa versa if its in the offensive or defensive zone. Those extra inches make a lot of difference. |

Gotcha, thanks. Makes sense, just never realized you're only in the zone when you clear the side closer to the goal line, never see that as scrutinized as guys on the point keeping it in the zone. |

It isn't too much gray area. They already add an "air element" for deciding when a defensive team has cleared the puck.
I also suspect that if - on a lifted shot - a puck completely crosses the goal line into the goal before the goalie gloves it, the rules deem that a goal, right?
