It has absolutely nothing to do with the CAP hit.. .its the commitment to the player.

They have directly told Bernier we chose you at $4M for two years. We value you more than....

fill in the blanks yourself.

- BorjeFan4Ever

That's because they had more confidence in Bernier than Reimer, because he gave them more reason to.

Good on Reimer for fighting back this season.

I think Bernier has more physical talent, and can definitely control rebounds better than Reimer when he is playing well.

But right now Bernier has lost it. Babcock said earlier he was tight at the start of games, and right now I think that tightness is very evident throughout the game.

He will get it back, I wouldn't write him off yet, but right now it is painful to watch.

Lets assume for a second they didn't have access to a time machine to see Reimer outplaying Bernier this season.

How were they wrong? It was the right decision to make based on the information available. Not a huge cap hit, and a short term contract, for a goalie who'd outperformed the other one.

Who would they have signed in UFA instead?

Side note: Bernier's contract is also structured so that he'll be pretty easy to move to a cash-strapped team come summer time, if he doesn't rebound. 2M Bonus paid out July 1st, meaning he'll only make 2M next season, with a cap hit of 4.

Buddy, its been a stretch of bad games for Bernier this season...much like we've seen from other goalies in the past. If it keeps up all year, then yes, the contract looks worse...but we have a couple of crappy contracts on the books right now. By the time the leafs are ready to make some serious waves, Bernier will be off the books, Reimer will be elsewhere or a back up to a new number 1...unless Reims plays lights out the next year and a bit. Neither goalie seems to be in the leafs long term plans as of now.
But its too early to say Bernier's career is over.
He's playing like crap this year...hopefully it wont last all year.

No one making excuses, in fact no one knows if any personal issue are the reason for him playing like crap. I believe Dozzer simply stated that if that were the case, he isnt a robot and it could affect him. Never said it was an acceptable excuse.

Also comparing a bus driver falling asleep and injuring someone.....not at all a relevant comparison.

Anyway, I dont expect Bernier back in the net anytime soon, which is fine...like Ive been saying...go with the goalie that gives you the better chance to win...right now its Reimer.

- Fakepartofme

as for the comparison of a bus driver... it wasn't so much the role as the responsibility or culpability.

yes - the professional athlete is just a culpable... just as they are if the accidentally injure someone with a high stick - it wasn't you intent but you are still responsible.

he's a professional athlete - not a late night beer league player.

its his job to prepare himself and maintain himself - mentally and physically - to play.
what's implied by the salary is "at a high level"....

so - if you're tired - you can't play at a high level ....

should you be considered in breach of your contract?

Maybe they should put him on a conditioning stint down with the Marlies, so he can get starts vs. easier competition.

Speaking of conditioning stints... what the (frank) did Corrado do to Babcock to still be on the bench?

that's the main reason for me saying the contract was BAD... now they are stuck to save the sieve's career - because they committed to the investment.
- BorjeFan4Ever

Isn't he only signed for this and next?

I'm not sure "they are stuck saving his career"

Are you not prepared for the 3-5 years of pain or have you got cup aspirations already?

yup - I'm raging.

I'm raging at about 1/2 a fan base who for some reason feel it necessary to make excuses for a guy - to the point where it is beyond any logic - and willing throw someone else under the bus at the same time.

You are absolutely correct - Bernier's career isn't over. The question is whether it should be for all intents and purposes.

The only thing that's preventing him from being written off is that fact that he has a big contract - and that the Leafs wasted a pick and a couple of players to get him.

and to be clear - I'm not "raging" at Bernier.

I'm "raging" at the "spousally challenged".

I dont know if he is tired, and Im not saying its a valid excuse....I was just saying that sometimes your personal life bleeds into work....in general. Not specific to bernier.
He's played like crap all year....I cant see being tired the reason for that.
That center ice goal.....simply no excuse for that....killed the team

He's playing like Mike Smith did last year. He got a sports shrink and he playing better this year. Bernier issues are between his ears.

agreed - that personal issues can effect your work.

I'm not entirely sure if you forgot the sarcasm indicator on your comment or not... but for example a bus driver makes an error and has an accident and injures someone, says he's tired or overtired - it doesn't change that fact that he's culpable for the accident. At some companies the bus line would lay off or suspend the resource... it wouldn't go unnoticed.

If Bernier had a lower body injury because his wife gave birth... well diagnose the injury, rehab it and get over it. Then get back in the line-up when your a 100% - don't come back with a built in excuse and say you 95% ... what the heck is that supposed to mean.

And quite frankly at $4M dollars plus he can pay for several nannies, pay for his in-laws to move in, pay for the modeling company's photographer to come at a time that is convenient.

Stop with the excuses.

- BorjeFan4Ever

so i have this straight, you're comparing a bus driver who puts peoples' lives in danger to an NHL goalie giving up soft goals?

You're starting to sound like a certain baldy.

Nobody is making excuses for him. He was the better goalie, now he's not. He has a 2 year contract. Babcock is clearly not trying to "save his career". 4M is ~6% of the team's cap.

Deep breaths.

no delusions of a grand finish here.... if somehow Reimer continued to play at the recent pace they still finish a long way from the playoffs in my opinion...

that's not the point.

if Bernier's confidence is busted ... then do what any other player would be asked to do to get it back...
