Feanor if you want to examine AMac's NZ play, instead of Corsi against (which isn't unrelated mind you), wouldn't it be better to examine zone entry stats?





Look at his improvement from his sample after we traded for him to his first full year: he went from eyeballs popping out of your head bad at NZ defense to bad but better than Grossmann. I don't doubt coaches worked on that with him, and the easier minutes definitely can help one's confidence defending without getting skated around. But he has always been a player AWOL at the blue line. MDZ was actually comparable to AMac last year, but playing top competition can do that to you if you're out of your depth. He's improved this year in Haks's system at it. Streit has never been good at NZ defense and still isn't really. But both those players generate a lot of offense too to offset whatever shortcomings, as Tomahawk said earlier. AMac didn't.

Funny thing about Manning is for all he's bad at, which is a lot, defending the blue line isn't one of them. SSS in the chart above but his stats are on par this year too. He's actually quite aggressive. I still dont want to see him play.

Larry Robinson should be in the discussion. Coffey does not belong in the discussion, except if offense alone is considered. Mark Howe was a very similar player to Lidström, but got a late start playing D and a bad back limited him the rest of his career after 1986-87.

Michel Petit didn't care for pogs.

I don't really buy his explanation considering Bellemare played mainly with Leier and Gagner on Saturday.

This is absurd to me. Medvedev doesn't speak English, is learning NA hockey for the first time, has had his ups and downs and STILL looks better than Manning's best performance. The guy is a Russian national top 4. Just give him time and confidence to work out his kinks -- everyone can see how skilled he is. Just needs time. Benching him for a 25 year old poor performing AHL All Star who wouldn't make the Russian national top 400 seems odd.

This is actually legit bugging me. Ghost was carrying Manning. Can you imagine a Ghost-Medvedev pairing? All the offense. All of it. Hexy and Haks have to stop trying to make Manning a thing.

Schenn on the top line at LW has never worked. It was even tried out a couple times this season. Definition of insanity.....

Putting him there backs up what I wrote yesterday on Schenn's scratching being more motivational than punitive though.

MDZ's offense has gone AWOL this season.

So I've studied the chart now and those numbers seem to back up what I was saying about the stats not supporting the theory that MacDonald is uniquely bad at giving up the blueline. Not when Schultz, Schenn and Grossmann, all allowed a significantly higher percentage of controlled zone entries. Schultz could possible be explained by the fact he faced the hardest matchups on the defense. The other two cannot.

I'm not talking about points when I say generating offense. He hasn't been good but his on ice team shooting percentage is laughably low and completely unsustainable. He will get his points sooner than later.

Just to add: he's rocking an on ice 2.1% shooting percentage this year. Amongst all NHL defensemen, that is fifth worst in NHL. He can control his own shooting, but all 4 of the other guys' is out of his control for the most part. I would call that number unlucky more than anything. I will buy low on MDZ's point stock

I sure hope the game winner on Saturday opens the floodgates and MDZ picks up his first 5 on 5 point sometime this month.
