Malkin to Vancouver?
It could be done, but if it looks like Pittsburgh would want a #1 defenceman, a top-3 forward, a defensive prospect, and more... what can Vancouver offer?
The Canucks top dman is Edler, our top-3 forwards are Sedin, Sedin, and Vrbata, our top dman prospects are Sautner, Subban, Pedan, McEneny, and Neill. Obviously, Vancouver won't give up either Sedin and likely not give up Subban. Where does that leave us?
To Vancouver:
Malkin ($9.5M until 2022)
and
Either:
Lovejoy ($1.1M until 2016)
or
Clendening ($761k until 2016 RFA)
To Pittsburgh:
Edler ($5M until 2019)
and
Vrbata ($5 until 2016)
and
Either:
Sautner ($675k until 2018 RFA)
or
Pedan ($792k until 2016 RFA)
or
McEneny ($585k until 2017 RFA)
or
Neill (unsigned draft pick)
and
2016 1st Round Pick
What does this mess all mean? In sending Edler and Vrbata to Pittsburgh for Malkin, the Penguins are taking back $500k in salary. Any of the defensive prospects the Canucks are sending to Pittsburgh, will have all salaries buried in the minors. I think the Penguins would be best served by taking Sautner back in this deal. As such, Vancouver has to take a contract back (ideally a defenseman such as Lovejoy or Clendening). In all, Pittsburgh will end up with less total salary. And the Penguins would regain a 2016 Round 1 pick which they don't currently have. The Canucks have been re-stocking their prospect cupboards the last few years, so missing a single Round 1 pick will be easier to swallow.

Yes, you never really win directly by trading a superstar but this would be taking a hit now to avoid one in the future. Malkin quit on the team last year and I think it is obvious he wants out of Sid's shadow.
SJ > Malkin, Scuderi & Bennett for Burns, Thornton & Hertl. Burns would be a great addition to the Pens blueline. Thornton could fill the 2C void for the next 2 years and Hertl would be a nice upgrade over Bennett. Pretty much a cap neutral deal.
NASH > Malkin & 3rd for Weber & 1st. Draft picks might need to get figured out but I think Nashville would sweeten the deal because they have defensive depth and really need a true 1C. Pens could flip Pouliot or their new pick for a 2C. Thornton or Staal perhaps.
COL > Malkin & Dumolin for Duschene & Barrie. Not sure why the Avs want to trade those two but this would be my proposal.
WPG > Malkin, Perron & Clendening for Buff, Scheifle & Ladd. Not sure I love it but I throw this out there as a higher risk move that would give them a better chance at winning this year. With Malkin & Perron off the books they would have cap space to resign both Ladd & Buff. Scheifle is a nice 2C.

pens fan getting so mad when people don't want their teams to trade 19-24 year old stud young guys for a 29 year old with $9.5 cap hit who hasn't played a full season in 7 years. Other teams aren't going to fix your problems for you. |

MacKinnon, Iginla and Barrie for Malkin, Hornqvist and Pouliot (maybe throw in Scuderi to make $$$ work) |

If the Pens get a 2016 1st round pick, the won't trade it for someone else. They don't currently have a 1st round pick in 2016.

Simple...they arent. Duchene rumour was a false coming from a fired ex-beat writer, Sakic said so himself, also why no hockey guys are reporting it themselves, just always according to Dater, and no one said Barrie is on the block, Friedman just said if Avs cant resign him (no indication that they cant or wont) that teams will be interested in him.
Also its a rule on Hockeybuzz, if you cant spell the player names right you want to trade for, you shouldn't be putting them in proposals. |

It's nearly impossible to move a contract like this with a 29 year old (made of glass) Russian Center. The best thing the Penguins can hope for is a 2 for 1 trade where they get a Stud Dman in his prime and a top prospect. Given the Cap Hit, Age, Injury History and the lack of high-quality Dmen that teams are willing to move, I don't think Geno is traded until next summer(if ever). |

You underestimate the organizations willingness to leverage the future for today. The Pens love trading picks and in that particular scenario it would be the right move. |

It can be done.
Edler-Hamhuis-Vrbata-Jensen to Pit
Malkin-Pouliot to Van.
Get it done.
