Don't compare yourself to a professional athlete, especially hockey players. It's never a good comparison, unless you left your home at age 14 to live with billets, then got drafted by your job and could work nowhere else in North America except for the place that drafted you

You can quit your job, if you want to, and get another job doing the exact same thing you currently do. Travis Hamonic can't quit the Islanders and play professional hockey elsewhere in the league, which is the exact same thing he currently does

Your life is your life, their life is theirs. They make more money, you have more freedoms, whether you realize it or not

No offense, I'm pretty sure his only skill--along with a lot of professional hockey players-- is actually playing hockey.

Someone hit the nail on the head, many of these guys go away at the age of 14. They're kids. Hockey is all they know. They just can't find another job.

Haha how is that better than asking for a trade? At least the isles would get something back.

I'm sure that McDonald's would pay him enough to keep up his mortgage and support his family.

Some people have to do that. And he's probably made enough already to support himself a while. God for id be downgrade his lifestyle

He's made $6.375M (more or less) professionally. Now, that's more than most of us will make in our lives. But people who make more money generally have a larger quality of living, so it's not like he's living in some random suberb and has all of that $$ sitting in a standard savings account. He likely has a multi-million dollar house with a mortgage upwards of $10,000 per month and other expenses that the normal blue-collar guy does not. So yeah, let's put him on food stamps and see if he can end up not going bankrupt. Also, he gave up the majority of his childhood since the age of 14 (and before, really) and past to play hockey. And yes, some people have to do that (or similar) but some of those people (not all) have also made some very bad life choices.

The only thing I don't like is that this came out publicly which means he's hamstrung his team with trade offers, much like Heatley did. If you want to be traded, then go to your GM behind closed doors and tell him and then keep it to yourself.

I'm shocked that a guy wants to be traded to be closer to his family and is getting blasted as a spoiled crybaby.

He did. He requested the trade prior to the season and just came out now

Well then it seems like he did the right thing.
