No, I'm not comparing apples to oranges, as the spot of the ball also can have consequences on scoring plays as well. If a referee rules a player down before the goal line, the team still has to challenge if it feels the player was in the end zone. So, whether you are talking about a first down or a touchdown, the same principal applies.

And if you think referee error in the NFL is less likely to impact a game than a referee error in the NHL, then you haven't been watching the NFL very much over the past decade.

every year a handful of games in nfl go wrong way due to the zebras

and each nfl game is more valuable for the playoff chances then an nhl game, by a tenfold

I would like to see this change to the rule:

If the goal happens on the fly and a legit offsides happened, then it should be reversed. But if the missed offsides happened, but all the opposition players had re-entered their zone before the goal happened, then the offsides had no bearing on the goal being scored. The defending team was not put at a disadvantage, they were all their to defend their zone. Last nights goal was scored well after all the Dallas players were back in their zone and defending. The goal should have stand.

I know this rule is to correct potential missed calls.

Can we get something in place, anything, that will help all the missed penalty calls that have been slowing the game down for years?

I think it is the second best show now on tv, a tad behind the blacklist and a head of the walking dead

what if the shoe was on the other foot and you were the team that negated the goal?
- Michael Pachla

It would be marginally less annoying, but I promise I don't like it in general. The way this game is played, does an offsides that gets missed before there's 3 minutes of action without a whistle negate a goal? It's like you don't even know what you're watching anymore.

This runs counter to the dynamic play style of this game which is what makes it so entertaining. Football, there's a break every 45 seconds.

I think you may need to enjoy the time period or have a love of history to really enjoy the show, but it's incredibly well done.

It almost feels like a sequel to Braveheart.

On your last blog sir, I understand your point of view and completely agree about the goalie equipment (who can forget the ridiculous shoulder pads that Garth Snow was allowed to wear when he was on the Flyers?), but I think widening the net, even by an inch, is a bit of the lazy way out.

It is far more difficult to both reduce the size of the goalie equipment and make referees call all the penalties they see, but that to me is all that needs to be done to get scoring back up to a reasonable rate.

Also, for all those that think people who enjoy more goals being scored are not true fans, they can take a hike and go enjoy something else instead because the game has been slowed down vastly since that post lockout season of speedy glory and that has definitely hurt the entertainment value of the game.

This is exactly how I feel about it. Replays/Challenges are so much easier in sports like Baseball and football because the games are so stop and go. There are well defined plays. Whereas in basketball and hockey, everything is much more fluid. Is there any type of challenge option in the NBA for anything? I don't watch Basketball at all, so I have no clue.

I don't believe there is a challenge system in the NBA Goose, but they do check replays to make sure a 3 point shot is a 3 and not a 2 and for shots that beat the clock either at the end of a shot clock, quarter, half, or the end of the game.

Well as long as one of them scores. It won't happen this year but I'd like to see O'Reilly and Eichel on the same line.

Way different in NFL. You have what? 6 minutes of actual game play in a 3 hour game?

Nice read as usual Michael. A few comments/observations from your post:

- The video replay on the offside call was the right call. No point in blaming the technology. Blame Ennis for being offside.
- Linus Ullmark's name should be changed to Lunging Ullmark. I love the kid but his lunging forward on certain shots makes me very nervous. Plus at times he looks really awkward in the net. Bring back Irbe - he seems to know how to coach goal-tenders.
- why is it that our 3rd lightest forward (Reinhart) is the only one who seems to be able to stand in front of the net during a powerplay?
- why does Gionta remain in the top 6 while Reinhart plays in the bottom six? Hopefully they aren't going to "Grigorenko" Reinhart. Having said this, I am happy to see Disco Dan plays him on the powerplay.
- Can't wait to see Jack and Kane back playing together. We need Kane's speed and tenacity back in the line up.
- finally, if we can trade Ennis+ for Fowler, sign me up.

Agree with all except Kane and Eichel are horrible with each other. They both like to have the puck and Eichel does not shoot when Kane is on his line he always tries to feed him the puck and then Kane shoots high and wide. Rather see Kane with ROR

i just dont understand the crush bylsma has on gionta. putting him on the ice with moulson makes it worse, moulson can sweep up the garbage but he needs somebody else to do the heavy lifting if hes gonna do much else. gionta may represent a veteran presence but i think the offense is pretty much gone from his game. hopefully girgensons or reinhart can start taking first line rw minutes away from gionta sooner rather than later. just looked at baptiste and baileys stats on the amerks and neither one is exactly banging on the door right now.
