The flip side of that is that they didn't lose the game either. - MJL
If your win total doesn't increment by 1 when the game is over, you lost.

I wouldn't say losing in the shootout is the same as losing in the hockey game, though. It's a bit closer to a tie. SOLs don't really tell you anything about what the club may be like in the postseason (when the games are decided correctly). |

I constantly see reasons given why Couturier isnt producing points but at a certain point a good part of that falls on him.
That being said he helps the team in other ways so I have no issues with him not putting up points right now.. |

Just looking at the number, you're right.
But it still is a loss. |

Case in point the Kings missed the playoffs last year because they were even worse in the shootout than us. |

Right, that's the ultimate problem. Were all games treated equally, I'd still have a problem with awarding a point to the team that didn't win the game. - Scoob

It's a two step process.
Step 1: rank teams by points
Step 2 (if necessary) : break ties using ROW
When the league adds a column for points percentage I will rethink my position on it's validity in determining playoff position.

If you cannot see the correlation between points and points percentage then there is no point in having this discussion with you. I can't really tell if you are just being stubborn or you actually don't comprehend it. |

Neither does losing in the 3 on 3 circus, even though it is wildly entertaining. |

As you already said, ROW is the tiebreaker.
However Philly finished ahead of CBJ in 13-14 despite having fewer wins. Because points are more important than wins. - Feanor
would that still be true if Reg wins were awarded 3 pts.? |

Not looking that up...but CBJ did have more regulation losses than the flyers. Flyers also had more ROW, so I would assume the Flyers would still be ahead in 3 pt system.
Flyers had 42 wins (3 in SO) and CBJ had 43 wins (5 in SO) |

Did they win?
If the answer is no, they get nothing.
You can take from that that while I think a 3-2-1 points system would be better than today's system, I would much prefer a return to two point games. Win, you get both. Don't win, you get nothing. |

The number in the loss column doesn't increment by 1 either when you lose in OT or in a shootout. |

Took my daughter to her first Flyers game on Tuesday night. She was hamming it up the entire time in her little Giroux jersey. Too bad she is too young to remember it. She was banging on the glass and all. Kids gonna be a smart one. |

That's fine and all well and good, but it's a two way street. They didn't lose either. The part that is the actual game, ended in a tie. Then we move on to the 3 on 3 circus and the skills competition. If that doesn't work, it's rock, paper, scissors. |

The Flyers made the Finals the last time they were .500 in wins for the season.
09-10: 41-35-6
But they were actually .537, which was just enough to make the playoffs. I'm sure you guys who insist that regulation losses and OT losses are the same refused to watch any playoff games that season out of principle. - Feanor

I certainly can see the correlation; it's simple math.
What I'm saying is that the points percentage has nothing at all to do with determining playoff position.
off to check some things......
Frank! - when it comes to tie-breakers there are conditions where points percentage does come into play, so far down the list I'm wrong. Frank
If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.
NOTE: In standings a victory in a shootout counts as one goal for, while a shootout loss counts as one goal against.
Edit: I still hate points percentage |

Under 2 they do not ( at least that is what I was told).
It was a great time, and somethign I will always remember. We were sitting in section 103 row 5 so I was a bit hesitant because I didnt want to bother anyone, but she was really well behaved and my wife and I had a great time. It was also our 3rd anniversary. We moved down to the glass for OT and the shootout and she was loving it. Smacking the glass, waving hello.. shame we couldnt eek out a win. |
