I hate when people say get rid of the ASG all together, the games suks anyways. True but I remember has a kid, I always enjoyed watching all the stars and all the goals at an ASG.
This new 3 on 3 format should still generate tons of goals, if not even more than before. The star power will still be there. As a kid, I would enjoy this. As an adult, I don't think that this format can't be any worse than the previous ASG.
There might not be much defense being played but the players are still gonna want to score and win that money.
I'm not expecting the best hockey, but I think it will be entertaining. I'm looking forward to at least watching it for this year.
there's one thing that worries me for this format. It's injuries to the goalies. I wouldn't want my teams goalie to go all out and pull a groin. There's going to be a ton of tic tac toe passes.
Hopefully the NBA can do a 2on2 all star game like NBA Jam. |

Here's what would make that All-star game interesting to me. Have a couple games where today's stars and alumni in the same game. Just imagine a line with Crosby, Gretzky and Messier up against Towes, Kane and Lemieux and trying to score on someone like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodieur or Carey Price. The game wouldn't be rough but it be cool to see Crosby feeding a pass to Gretzky or vice versa. Most young players would be trying to set up a scoring play for the Alumni guys anyway! I think something like that would be very entertaining. - NewfieStud
Do it in the off-season, make a weekend of it with a "fan experience" zone, get non-playing current and alumni players to come and sign autographs, give all money to charity.
It's got all the star power you could want; fans young and old can interact with the stars of today and yesteryear; the game would be fun to watch.
A winning idea. |

Especially the goalie from the game 1 winning team. He's going to have a longer than normal break by the time game 3 rolls around. |

The solution for lack of fan interest is so obvious. All this 3 on 3 nonsense just shows how little imagination the league has.
Simply chain an adult Siberian tiger to the centre ice dot! Duh!
It's common knowledge that half of all hockey fans watch out of morbid fascination rather than the sport itself. This percentage has probably dropped a bit due diminished fighting, but can quickly be restored to all it's former glory, after a few sub-par skaters get torn to shreds at center ice.
Can't find a tiger? Fine use a bear. I hear lots of polar bears are having trouble finding firm ice to stand and hunt from, so this is a win-win in my books.

Am not sure the goalies will be thrilled about this. They are gonna have to work their arses off in this format.
Can't help but remember it was an all-star skills competition that gave DiPietro his last major injury, when he screwed up his knee, mic'd up. |

In fairness, a stiff breeze could have screwed DiPietro's knee up too. |

Or they can just do like baseball and make it count for something . ....end of story
The worst part of the MLB ASG is the fact they make it "count for something". The fact the players play for 162 games but home field advantage is decided by other players is a joke. Besides, in spite of the game "counting" the game is not managed as such. Players are subbed out after a few innings, pitchers sometimes less so that most if not all players can appear in the game. Sorry, but a game that "counts" isn't managed to have all players appear in the game. A game that counts you keep the best players on the field as long as possible. This is especially true for pitchers. The MLB decision to have home field advantage determined by the ASG was a knee-jerk reaction to a tie game which couldn't go to extra-innings b/c each team had basically expended their bench subbing in players so they could make an appearance. |

I do like that the skills competition means something (you know, as much as any of this means anything). Also glad they aren't dipping into the absurdity that is the MLB all-star game giving World Series home field.
I'm personally fine with it being an SO immediately after regulation if tied. I get where 3-on-3-isn't-hockey detractors are coming from (they're wrong, but I get where they're coming from). But 2-on-2 wouldn't be hockey; it would be whichever-team-has-a-player-fall-over-first-loses.
3-on-3 can actually happen during the normal course of a game. Insanely rare, yes, but it can happen. 2-on-2 cannot, and for good reason. |

I for one kinda like this idea. Will it get me excited about the ASG, no. Will I tune in, probably.
3on3 ASG isn't going to be the "true" form of hockey that everyday hockey fans have come to love. Unfortunately there is no way to solve this. Nothing the NHL does is going to make the teams want to go hit each other much less drop gloves. Defense will be at a premium however with the extra space I actually think there could be more spectacular type defensive plays than we had 5on5. Either way I'm ok with them making this much needed change |

For the two divisions left in the third period, it's simple: give each team in the winning division 2 points in the standings, and give each team in the losing division 1 point in the standings, and then boom, this game matters. |

That would be terrible. A fake game should have no affect at all on the real standings. |

Here is where you're wrong. I think this 3-v-3 tourney should definitely decide home field advantage for the World Series. Think how pissed off baseball players would be? |

I think they just should have a Europe vs North America game. Have a Trophy and let the media remeber every player through the season witch part of the world has the best hockey. I think players will be competetiv then. Mabye have the names of the player that won that year on the trophy aswell.
Also keep the skill competition. |
