Who has said, or even implied that someone else can't do it better? You haven't made your case that I will defend this guy to the death. As with any play, I look at everything, not with an obvious bias because I don't like a player. For me, it has zero to do with who I like or don't like. It's simply about what happened.

Del Zotto is a -9. Schultz in a -6.

- MJL

You like Schultz because he "plays the hard minutes" I'd like to see someone else given a shot. MDZ had an abysmal start to the year, but has been improving (to me) steadily over the past month despite some hiccups here and there. Schultz just kinda stays average.

And here is my main gripe with Schultz: When he gets the puck and there is any type of forecheck, his main move is to blindly throw it up the weak side boards and hope it clears without an icing. No looking for the outlet, no D to D, no chip, just throw it up the boards. Schenn and Gudas aren't any better, but I think Schenn is a better defender on the rush and on in-zone play. The rest of them have the patience and quick decision making skills to consider other options.

Edit: Haven't you always preached that +/- is a team stat and not a good way to measure an individual's success. Something about context, I'm sure.

But man, if we had a guy like Babcock, we'd be so much better off. Just look at the wonders he's worked for Toronto this season.

Also, Garrett Sparks should just retire. His career can only go downhill from here on out. Same with Mario Lemieux. He scored on his first shot on his first shift. After that, nowhere to go but down.

Ghost can blow coverage and fall down trying to cover Mike Fisher just as well as Schultz can.

I never said he was " way better" than Luke Schenn. What I said was IF we are playing Luke at the 6 Dman position and paying 3.5M, I would rather have Manning at that position and pay him 650K.
Schenn has been better this year, but I would still trade him at deadline or sooner.

Schenn has been much, much better than Manning. And Gudas for that matter. Give me Schenn over both, even with the money difference

It's far from the only way to measure a defenseman's worth to a team, but looking at the dmen with the worst CF% this season is still interesting. Lots of familiar names in the top 25 like:

5 - Bogosian
7 - Girardi
10 - Grossmann
16 - McDonagh
21 - Colaiacovo
22 - Schultz
24 - Streit

http://stats.hockeyanalys...orsi&sort=PCT&sortdir=ASC

Some of the numbers can be explained by many of these dmen getting punishingly difficult DZ starts, but only some.

+/- is a team stat. It was posted simply to show that the results when Del Zotto is on the ice defensively aren't any better than when Scultz is on the ice defensively

It's not about liking.or disliking the player.

MDZ-Gudas has been a much more capable pairing than MDZ-Schenn was last season. Gudas has been very good at stifling shot attempts while playing a lot of minutes on the first and second pairings, while Luke hasn't been a 20 minute a night guy since 12-13.

Can't really argue, since being paired with MDZ, Gudas has looked better and has seen an uptick in his possession numbers. In a vacuum, I'd still prefer Schenn. I think a Schenn-Medevdev pair could be really solid.

I'd rather package something with Morin for Seth Jones than sending whatever to Winnipeg for Buff.

What if the price as Morin, Konecny, and one of 2016 or 2017 1st?

MDZ-Gudas compliment each other well. Gudas runs out of position to make a hit, and MDZ tries to cover for him. Everyone gets a participation award and then party.

Sanheim and Konecny named to Canada's World Junior selection camp, and are locks to make the team outside of injury. Aube-Kubel missed out.
