No, but they are big part. While Streit has skill, he's not the swiftest skater. Having 3 guys on D (MDZ is the other) that call all skate well and have good skills has been a big plus. - BiggE
There is no denying the benefits of skilled defensemen, I am just stating that other things (besides the defense) were changed during this time. i.e. Voracek moved off of Girouxs wing
This is why it never hurts to bring a guy up and see what he's got. Some players just play better when the competition is tougher. I hope we get a look at each of the D prospects on the Phantoms by the end of the year. Never know who will surprise. - funmaster18

that's all i ask, sir!
edit: amd none of this watch em like a hawk play them 2 minutes a night crap! get them in flow of the game see how they perform for a few games. it's not gonna hurt anything this season.

I think it depends on the player.
Ghost is a little older at 22. He can be hidden a bit and used on the PP because of his skill set (disclosure: I don't know if his stats say he's being hidden, but his EV TOI was not much higher than Manning's from last night).

Idk. The quote doesn't say phone conference so I assumed an in-person meeting.
Also, in-person meetings generally lead to 5+ games. Was that hit worthy of 5+? I don't think so, but... - Scoob
I'd say 1-3 wouldn't be out of the question with the way the league is trying to get rid of these types of hits. anymore would be excessive, IMO. Maybe he only gets one if he doesn't have a history (not sure if he does or not), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than one game. Clearly took a shot at his head. His high-fiving teammates on the bench after the shift won't help his case.

They did bring him up last year - YuenglingJagr
I didn't say they didn't. I'm saying it doesn't hurt to bring a guy up and see what he's got. Some people think it could hurt their development, even if it's just a for a few games.
Umberger is not being waived for Colin MacDonald. I thought they needed to waive him to create a roster spot, but I was mistaken (counting is not my strong suit!) When everyone is healthy my forward lineup would be:
Schenn-Giroux-Voracek
Read-Couturier-Simmonds
VDV-PEB-White
Laughton-Gagner-Raffl
spares: Umberger and Vinny
However, if for some reason they needed an extra 375K of cap space, I'd have no problem with waiving Umberger and bringing MacDonald back up to be a spare forward. If I never see Umberger in a Flyers lineup again, I won't lose any sleep over it. - BiggE
I don't mind those lines at all, except I'd play Laughton or Raffl in the middle and Gagner on the RW. He's been terrible at faceoffs here.

Nope. And I don't care how much they are producing in the AHL. If a guy gets called up for a game or two and sent back, then can't find his scoring or appropriate level of play again, that would be concerning in itself.

I don't know if age really factors in. If a guy is showing signs he may be able to contribute, call him up when there is an injury and play him a game or two. Some guys may actually get motivated by that and when they get back to the A, play their butts off to get back to the big leagues.

I'd like to see them do the same with Straka and Morin. Giving each of them a few games in the NHL is not going to hurt them in any way whatsoever.

i think it works wonders. if the player is mentally weak then he's never gonna cut it. but a few games aside from the organization seeing what they got, also shows the player first hand what he's going to be up against. So when he's working out, practicing, watching film etc. he knows how much harder to work to get where he needs to be.
For sure, but even if Raffl is playing wing, he can still take the faceoffs. I just think that for Gagner to be successfully offensively, he needs to play center. He loses way too many battles along the wall and in the corners to play wing.

Whether you like Crosby or not, the fact that Dubinsky only got one game for cross-checking the back on Crosby's neck and then breaking his stick over Crosby when he was on the ice sets a precedent that, unless you're Raffi Torres or Zac Rinaldo, you can do whatever you want and get, at max, 1-2 games. I see a $2500 fine coming.

Calling someone up in the event of injury and if they can contribute is perfectly reasonable.
Calling someone up for the sake of calling someone up (regardless of their play) seems like a waste of time.

agreed
All these guys smell blood in the water and that there are spots to be won. I'd love to see how they respond to a call up.

I believe I said back in October that it would be worth calling up Ghost to replace Manning, not because Ghost would necessarily be any better defensively, but because of the offensive spark he would provide.
As it turned out Streit got hurt and Ghost came up that way.

When Streit comes back I'd like to see him play on the second pairing with Medvedev, who is a swift skater. They may have to move LSchenn to make that happen, but that should be quite possible in January.
