They should have. The whole Carle/Weber mess really threw them off. - jmatchett383
Holmgren missed out on Weber, he made up for it by landing Suter. |

Honeslty, if your spending that much time with your little son in that situation, that's a clear sign that it's over. - MJL
Maybe they could reach an agreement, where Mr. Snider will let him and his son practice with the scratches if he immediately retires? |

Whats odd to me is I remember him saying that he was unlikely to finish out his contract when trade talks were possible.....Now he says he hasnt event though of retirement. I say he is fine riding the bench and collecting his millions at the same time sticking it to one of the only teams that actually wanted him in the first place. - flyerfan28
Why would he go anywhere? His son gets all the ice time he wants. Gets to sit with dad in the Shelley suite to watch every game with all the popcorn he wants. I mean he's living what all of us can only dream about while getting paid millions. The situation is brightening up for him actually.

Yup. He's better off sitting in the press box not enduring the wear and tear. He knows he can't play anymore, it's a better situation finishing his career out in the press box opposed to playing 6-8 minutes a game embarrassing himself on a 4th line. |

But if you're spending that much time with your son, and he's having a ball, and you're making millions while doing it, why rock the boat? |

I think it only depends on how long he plays. - MJL
Yep, and the way he's going now, I think only an injury will stop him from getting 2nd place. |

His son is the teams new mascot. All the players love him, Vinny provides great leadership to the other scratches. It's all good. |

Well that's depressing..why us?!?!? - Nucker101
Why? Lavi, that's why. He said he came here because he really wanted to play for Laviolette. This, more than anything else, is what drove me nuts about Homer and why I wanted him out as GM. If you fire your coach 3 (frank)ing games into the season, you obviously had already lost confidence in him. The smart move would have been to fire Lavi as soon as the prior season ended. That way the new coach gets the benefit of having a preseason to break in his system and VLC probably signs somewhere else.
Holmgren (frank)ed up royally on this one, there is no defending it. And before you start babbling about hindsight is 20/20 etc...answer this question. How often do NHL coaches get fired 3 games into a season? Answer: Only when they work for Paul Holmgren.
Look, I loved Homer as a player, had his jersey as a kid, and I think he had a good start as GM, but he screwed up badly after losing Pronger, no 2 ways about it. |

Flyers need a mascot. They haven't had one since Shelley left town!

Oh it's easily defensible. Just look at Tampa Bay...they're the idiots who used a compliance buyout on Vinny! And Malone! And they have Gagner money on their cap! They'd rather have dead money than dead players those idiots!! Every team deals with it! |

Sure if you ignore the fact that he obviously wants to play, and doesn't want to waste his last few years in the league as a healthy scratch, everything is peachy-keen for him. Bright as the California sun! |

How often does an NHL coach get fired in April with his team in 2nd place in the conference? Only when they work for that fool Lou Lamoriello. GM don't give a rat's ass about precedent, only about what they think is best for the team. A good GM's recognizes a mistake, and moves to fix it. |

I'm sorry but firing a coach 3 games into a season makes zero sense and reflects very badly on management. Either you trust him or you don't, if he was already 3 games away from during him then he shouldn't have waited an entire summer and training camp to do so. |

Wrong! Holmgren recognized his mistake (the fact it was months late) be damned.
Not to mention he replaced Laviolette with that master tactician Craig Baba Roobey. Did you see the bidding war for his services when he was dismissed by the Fyers? |

Considering the statement I made in my post of " a good GM recognizes a mistake, and moves to fix it" indicates that I also think it was a mistake, not to fire him, after the previous season. I don't think you were around then, but I was one of the few calling for Laviolette to be fired after the previous season. Oh so many objected to it. |
