Not only did the Flyers get the far inferior player in the Hartnell trade, they got a guy who can't stay on the ice. He was injured when Hextall traded for him, and he's been injured the entire time he's been with the Flyers. Really a brutal trade. The future cap space gained does not remotely offset the loss of production. - PLindbergh31

Fantastic write up, as always, Bill.
Realistically, how many prospects could we see participating at the WJHC later this month? - Coleman
Canada: Sanheim and Konecny
Russia: Provorov and Fazleev
Sweden: Lindblom and Sandström (may be a back up, may start)
Czech Republic: Kase
Most of these guys are locks. Fazleev isn't a lock but has a good shot.

gagner isn't anything special by any means. that being said they should have found a role for him. right now dead space and no value at all - rinaldo
It's not always up to a team to find a role for a player |

also it gets overlooked big time imo that hextall liked RJ as a player. that is scary. |

It was bad decision on many levels.
First, he only came here because he wanted to play for Laviolette. So of course, they fire Lavi 3 games into the season. If they had done the right thing, and fired Lavi after the end of the previous season, Vinny likely never even considers coming to the Flyers.
Second, they had 2 young centers in Couturier and Schenn already on the roster. They should have already been in rebuilding mode at that point and let the 2 of them compete to be the 2nd line center.
Finally, anyone who had watched VLC could see that by 2013 he was nowhere near the player that he was in his prime. Offering him a 5 year deal was just poor cap management and a bad decision all around. He should have been offered 3 years, 15 million max, and, if he choose to go elsewhere, so be it. - BiggE
Every organization makes mistakes, no doubt about that. Multiple bad mistakes in the cap era take years to overcome. VLC, MacDonald, the JVR trade, Umberger these transactions have set this franchise back tremendously. No way around it. It's a huge reason why the are in rebuild mode despite spending every last dime.

Gagner is hurt, no? I'm guessing Cousins goes back to LHV when Gagner returns. - johndewar
Yeah I was referring to them making him a healthy scratch with a full lineup. With Vinny on the roster id bet they would rather get rid of a defenseman though |

Vinny is on the roster for paperwork purposes only, he's not really on the roster. |

they should be providing opportunity, but it is up to the player to perform and make it stick...i wouldnt say that gagner has done that. His offensive skill is fun to watch, but it doesnt seem like they are okay with the rest of his game |

Agreed, which is why they would want to keep him as a 14th forward and not a 13th |

I'm really hoping he finally realizes that he just can' t cut it anymore and retires after receiving his bonus in July. That way the Flyers would only have to carry 500K of dead space on their cap for one season.
However, I'm not holding my breath.

ok so if the coach puts him in a role of 4th line winger with white and vdv. that is a good role for him to be in? |

Works for me. I really don't think he'll get claimed, but if he does, so what? He will never be more than a 6/7 guy at best. He's 25 and in his 4th or 5th pro season, he is what he is. Between AMac, Morin, Alt, Hagg and Drewiskie, they have more than enough depth.

It will be interesting because the Flyers have to decide to buy him out or not by June 30th. |
