Maybe they should bring up Morin then, at least for a practice. And, if he happens to run into Vinny, at full steam, from behind, well...poop happens - BiggE
At least Vinny could go out as an injured player instead of washed up |

Theres no way a team would take him on a two year deal. The Flyers forward depth is truly terrible and they can't even find a spot for him. Finding a team that would take him on a two year deal that he would also accept a trade to is impossible. Just need to ride this thing out IMO - PhillySportsGuy
If he doesnt accept a trade to anywhere then he should never suit up for an NHL game again. I think there is still a chance he could go to like 2 or 3 teams at max salary retention...but it is highly doubtful, and if the reports were true that Hextall turned down a retained salary trade, it will be a mistake in hindsight |

a game here and there and rotating in. they haven't been sat because of their performance imo. just part of the rotation. what about Shultz, he hasn't looked good? - rinaldo
I agree. I was just answering your question. |

No doubt Schultz is not as good of a player as we would like, but I would say he has done what he has been asked to do for the most part |

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree, but I will caveat that he's not suited to do what he's been asked to do. |

Read-Couturier-Simmonds has been, by far, their best possession line and they are finally scoring as well. Why would you break them up now? - BiggE
it's really Simmonds scoring |

I read a very good article which talked about how Schultz may not be a good fit for the style Hakstol wants the dmen to play.

Schultz, Schenn and Manning have had difficulty being aggressive at the blue-line for different reasons. Schenn is willing to do so, but his poor foot-speed means he has no room for error, he cannot recover if he over-plays the man and gets beat. Manning is also willing to do so, but seemingly makes poor decisions regularly on when and where is best to be aggressive in defending his zone.
Schultz is frankly a player who was simply far better suited to the defensive system the Flyers ran under Berube, which involved a less pro-active way of defending the zone, and relied more on containment. He is an able enough skater, but he has a defense first head on his shoulders, almost 1000 NHL games under his belt and is not helped by having to go up against the best players on opposition teams since Coburn has left. Attacking the blue-line is not ‘his’ game … but it is also understandable why he is at times reluctant to do so when facing the likes of Tavares, Benn, Ovechkin and Nash’s of the world, a tiny error and they will take no prisoners, give no second chances. |

Read's been doing a lot of the stuff that makes it possible for the puck to end up on Simmer's stick, in scoring position. |

Agreed. I was clamoring for them to trade VL after his first season. The writing was on the wall and they should have known it would just get worse. Once they didn't move him that offseason, I knew they'd be stuck with him forever.
As a side, I don't understand why more teams don't retain salary in order to get a better asset. The Flyers aren't going to contend next season either, so why wouldn't they offer to retain salary on Streit if it means getting a better return. Streit at $5M next season seems fair, but Streit at say $3M would be a steal especially with the cap likely remaining the same. |

Impossible.
Unless each guy on the line is weaving through 5 opposition players by himself to score goals, he can't possibly be a good offensive player.

Definitely agreed on style. I was very disappointed to see he resigned for 2 years. But Schultz has actually been one of the better Flyer defensemen at in zone defensive coverage. Would certainly love to see him improve at preventing zone entries, and I would also love to see him not play for the Flyers anymore. |

huh...I read* a #fancystats article that detailed, excruciatingly, a theory on why Schultz stays in the lineup.
*more like skimmed. I started reading it but quickly began dozing off due to the #fancystats, so I started skimming to find the point of the article. Interestingly, Bill once wrote that the goalies love the way Schultz plays in the defensive end. I'm sure they didn't use #fancystats to come to their conclusion, though. |

I skimmed it, too. Really all you need to know is there are plenty of dmen around the league who stay in the lineup and despite having a CF% under 45. Like Schultz, they usually get a lot more DZ starts than OZ starts. |
