It was bad decision on many levels.

First, he only came here because he wanted to play for Laviolette. So of course, they fire Lavi 3 games into the season. If they had done the right thing, and fired Lavi after the end of the previous season, Vinny likely never even considers coming to the Flyers.

Second, they had 2 young centers in Couturier and Schenn already on the roster. They should have already been in rebuilding mode at that point and let the 2 of them compete to be the 2nd line center.

Finally, anyone who had watched VLC could see that by 2013 he was nowhere near the player that he was in his prime. Offering him a 5 year deal was just poor cap management and a bad decision all around. He should have been offered 3 years, 15 million max, and, if he choose to go elsewhere, so be it.

Most of this is hind sight. Lecavalier's last season in TB, he scored at a 67 point pace. The back injury, which nobody could predict, greatly sped up his decline in my opinion. A player who wasn't a great skater to start with, was now an even worse skater.
It made sense to bring in Lecavalier, and to allow time for the younger players to develop. Even now there are many complaints about the production from the center position after Giroux, so there was a reasonable need.
You also did not consider that the 5th year by many reports was only added for cap purposes to lower the cap hit, and that Lecavalier has never intended to play the 5th season.

There is only one reason, and really it's the only reason needed, and that's the fact that Lecavalier has not played well, and is now not even in the player rotation.

"Schultz is frankly a player who was simply far better suited to the defensive system the Flyers ran under Berube, which involved a less pro-active way of defending the zone, and relied more on containment. He is an able enough skater, but he has a defense first head on his shoulders..."
- Feanor

There may be something to that... Schultz was good in MIN under Lemaire's system, (frank)ing horrible in EDM in their up-tempo, more aggressive system.

I don't think Vinny will retire at all. Read an article this morningthat interviewed him about his current state with the flyers and if retirement has crossed his mind . "No it hasn't. I'm mentally tough." Sounds like he's completely ok sitting on the sidelines cashing in checks

It's December in the middle of an NHL season. I don't think he'd admit to that, even if he was thinking about it.

Yeah I know....I just had an issue with saying a guy is who he is this soon after regular NHL time. not all players and especially defensmen get it right away. We agree that there is less risk in losing him for nothing due to the Flyers depth at defense. I just think you could do much worse than Manning as a 7.
- YuenglingJagr

There are roster issues at play, but if it just came down to choosing between Manning and Gagner, I'm keeping Manning all day long, and saying goodbye to Gagner.

Let's not forget that Med has been playing a different game, on a different rink, his whole life... I doubt he had much time to be watching NHL hockey, too.

Parts of his game translated very easily to NA (NZ, transition, point-play)... but he's been an adventure in his own zone. Maybe they wanted him to take some time to learn/observe/absorb while they got a better read on Manning?

A perfect example is that turnover on that wide rim. He did that on instinct. I bet that's a play that works most of the time on the wide ice surface.

Why can't the Flyers do what the Kings did and come to an "agreement" on how much he should be paid to mutually terminate? And just have that amount be his remaining salary?
- jmatchett383

That wasn't a mutual termination. The Kings voided his contract on whatever grounds they supposedly had. Richards filed a grievance and that was the settlement they reached.

I'm sure next time he's in that position he'll skate behind the net and regroup rather than make that risky pass.

Fine. Void his contract on some trumped-up charge, have him file a grievance, and pay him to settle.

Bill,

What's a realistic timeframe to see Lindblom stateside playing professionally?

- flyguy12

Realistically, AHL next season and hopefully pushing for NHL job the year after.

Well, despite the fact that I don't post as much in here as I used to (that's what happens when you go from procrastination friendly graduate student life to holy sh!t I am so behind on deadlines faculty life) the team itself has sucked me back in. A few weeks ago I posted something to the extent of "(frank) this team, no way am I shelling out to see them in a city 3 hours away, where they always lose when I am there, and they are sucking this bad."

Fast forward to last night when I shelled out for seats 3 rows up from the ice, right next to the visitors (Flyers) bench in Columbus.

I'll be taking my 6 year old to his third game (and hopefully 1st Flyers win). We went to Columbus in December 2014, Nashville last year, and the law of averages (and the recent play) says Philly is winning this year while we sit just off the ice. Right? RIGHT?

EDIT: ON a side note it will be fun to be back in that building for the second time in 2 months...of course I expect the atmosphere to be a bit different and quite a bit less smoky than when I was in town for the Dead and Company show last month.
