I suppose, I guess I just favor the players that actually take pride in what they do and what it means to be an NHL player. The money aside, he's basically stealing a roster spot from a guy who's likely on a two way contract, and thats a big deal for those guys. Is Vinny's life going to be any different if he's worth 70, 80 or even 100 million? Not really. I have no respect for him anymore. He was given a chance with a new coach, tried his best, but just can't cut it.
Stop stealing another, more deserving, players job; hang em up, Vinny. Please. - BiggE
With all due respect, that is complete and utter crap. The Flyers gave him that spot when they signed him to the contract.
something similar I have said for a while...have him just flat out retire...flyers hire him for whatever was owed that he lost retiring. make up some titel or whatever.
though I don't tell him he will be bought out. he may want that.- - rinaldo
Problem is, buy out window ends before he is due his bonus. So if he doesn't retire, you're stuck, unless you have an opportunity during arbitration-there's a second window, but I believe it's only open to teams that have arbitration cases that get an award.
So I think you need to dangle the stick & the carrot
Let's hope he doesn't get bought out though because he definitely has incentive now for retiring a year before his contract is up
I want a buy out to just be done with this mess. It's uncomfortable for management, Vinny, and his teammates. The buyout is pennies, especially with all the entry level contracts coming up. Just bite the bullet and buy him out. It's not even a bullet really -- more like a nerf dart - Mononoke
Yep. If he can't land another deal in the NHL, there's zero reason for him to retire early. Show up, stay in shape skate in practice, play when guys get hurt.

Tell him he can play, but he has to be the goalie. If he doesn't play, then you can suspend him. If he does play, just have Ghost blast slap shots at him from 10 feet away.

this assumes they have this conversation well ahead of time and he agrees to retire. if not I still dont tell him then if you want to buy out then you do. I actually tell him the opposite, we will not buy you out.

I respect him. I feel for him, too. He wants to play, he just can't. I don't blame him for not doing the Flyers any favors

And he does, per his contract. He travels with the team, stays in shape, attends all of the meetings, and arrives at the arena for the game. - jmatchett383
i thought he's signed to be an nhl hockey player not a roadie

Sorry, I completely disagree. Yeah, technically they signed him to a deal with an NMC, I get it, but it's his choice to enforce it and stay. The Flyers would happily waive it if they could. Spin it any way you want, but the fact remains, Vinny is choosing to stay on the roster and in doing so he is taking a job from a more deserving player. In the end, it's why he will get bought out (again), its not about the cash, its about the roster spot and whats best for the team on the ice

I'd have the conversation with him today. And have it again and again, and if I didn't have a firm yes, I'd buy him out on the first possible day.
I tell him because if you don't, there's no reason at all for him to retire. He's still getting paid, gets use of facilities, gets to travel, He'll, if injuries occur he even gets to play.
But if he knows he's going to get dumped, regardless, maybe he says screw it and walks away

I disagree. He's doing his best to get in the game. The Flyers feel his best isn't good enough. The Flyers can easily free up that spot with one word: buyout.

Fair enough, we aren't gonna see eye to eye on this, so be it. Lets just hope that someway, somehow the whole thing gets resolved before the start of next season.

it is a game of chicken, just depends how you want to handle it..i call his bluff as no need to buy him out just yet imo. wait another year

I'm leaning towards them buying him out, if for nothing more than to get it over with. These "creative" ideas we're coming up with here are fun, but there are really only three options: mutually terminate, buyout, retire. I think the first and third are remote possibilities at best.
