He is probably pissed off at the Coach for playing third line minutes and I don't blame him. This is just getting ridiculous now. How are you going to get him out of his funk playing on the third line. He was third in scoring last year in the entire league, he obviously has the talent, let him work through this with Giroux. - Daceroni
Well, he had his chances to prove the coach wrong on PP and in the OT. He did not.
And trust me Roo has been doing his best to set up Jake on PP or 3V 3.
I feel very sorry for him, but he needs to start climbing not digging. |

Mark Fayne waived by the Oilers.

Kind of an odd move.
I get that Nurse and Davidson are fixtures now... but why push out the guy you've been giving the 2nd-toughest minutes and actually does better than the team avg in shot-diff (#2 rank on the blueline)?
He seems to give up a lot of scoring chances, but interestingly enough, they seem to be of the low-danger variety.
Flyers could do worse than Fayne on the bottom-pair, but yeah, already too many bottom-pair dmen on board. He's like a better RH version of AMac. |

Not sure where you got the idea the scoring chances he gives up are low danger ones.
One stat highlights Fayne’s woes here, the number of major mistakes he has made on Grade A scoring chances against.
I’ve been involved in hockey analytics since 2007 now, and in that time I’ve increasingly come to believe that the key to sound analytics is to focus on the most crucial aspects of the game and the players most significantly involved in those plays. As a result, this year I’m not only breaking down scoring chances into Grade A and Grade B, as I’ve done in the past, I’m also breaking down the contributions to scoring chances into major and minor categories.
I’m focusing in on the key actions on those key moments on hockey’s kill floor, right in front of the net. Who does the killing there? Who gets slaughtered?
Most often a major contribution is a pass or shot into the slot or in the slot that leads directly to a Grade A scoring chance. A major mistake is a mistake that allows direct access to the slot or a mistake in the slot on a scoring chance. Most often, those mistakes are missed assignments (such as being slow to cover a shooter or passer), turnovers and lost battles.
Fayne has made 43 such major mistakes on Grade A chances in 348 even strength minutes, about 1.9 per game (with a game defined as 15 minutes even strength). That’s the highest rate for a regular d-man on the Oilers this year, with all the other d-man around 0.8 to 1.1 such major defensive mistakes on Grade A even strength chances per game. So they’re only about half as likely to get burned in the slot as he is. |

And for those lamenting PEB's many chances to score last night, ponder this: 101 NHL games, 9 goals. He's a very good 4th liner/pk guy, thats it. Expecting any more and you're just setting yourself up to be disappointed. - BiggE
Totally agree. The problem isn't those players, it's where and how they're using both Vandevelde and Bellemare. Both are fine as 4th line players and on the PK. Start using them as more than that, and there will be issues. |

I've heard rumors of what Mason's personal issue is, and I think it's still on his mind and contributing to his inconsistent play. The rumor I heard isn't some kind of scandalous thing, like drugs or anything, but I do think it's impacting him.
He sa good goalie, and eventually he's going to be back to his old self. If somebody blew me away, I'd listen, but I still think he rebounds and gets back to being a very good goalie. - Jsaquella

I always thought that "scoring chances" were the most arbitrary stat in the game, let alone trying to break them down and categorize them. Technically, a 190-foot clearing attempt on the PK that trickles on net is a "scoring chance" because you have the chance to score. |
