can any team claim they have more wasted $$ on players than the flyers?
vinny, andymac, umberger, read, jake? talk about a lack of return on investments. - rinaldo
Oilers have some pretty terrible contracts....Panthers as well. Carolina was there until they bought out Semin |

Just wanted to say. Neuvirth really played well in the first especially. Flyers started the game on their heels and I really think the team fed off of his effort to keep the puck out of the net. |

The only contract situation I have concern about is the MacDonald situation, and how that is going to play out. I'm not worried at all about the Lecavalier or Umberger deals. |

Maybe that's Hextall's plan. Bide his time, build the pipeline, and avoid attention until n the league is paralyzed by the worst years of all the megadeals. Then, we strike. |

Yeah, the MacDonald contract is definitely worrisome. The Umberger contract is not a cause for concern anymore and I've become sort of numb to the whole Lecavalier situation. |

Worse in terms of money spent on useless players I would agree...but I do not think they are the worst in terms of overall cap trouble. The flyers are in the roughest part (maybe this offseason will be considered rock bottom depending on how a few things work out) at a time where the cap crunch is the heaviest. It is certainly not an ideal situation, but the team as it stands is less of a product of a design and more of a victim of the cap crunch. Maybe the organization should have seen the signs and played it safer, but there is a lot more at fault for the cap situation than 3 contracts.
some teams lucked out, some teams got it bad. Garth Snow has done great things in NY, but what he was able to do on defense was only possible by the lack of spending and success the team had for years, and it happened at the perfect time. |

There are teams that will have a much harder time keeping their young core together....there are teams that will have a much harder time keeping their team together at all....there are teams that have money buried in the AHL or scratched (none more than the flyers)....and there are teams that will have some terrible looking contracts down the road
So no overall I dont think the flyers are the worst, but there is no arguing they are spending tons of money on players with little to non existent roles on the team |

It just so happens that your team here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. |

i think once these bad contracts expire we'll see less of the activity we saw in the last 5 years teams are starting to experience first hand how handcuffed they can get |

I think the biggest issue with the team is a product of design. Failure to draft and develop defenseman is the single biggest issue with this team, without a doubt. Look at the impact that Gostisbehere has had? If the Flyers had been able to draft and develop of couple of quality defenseman, this would be a pretty good team. I like Leddy and Boychuck, and both are pretty good players, but I don't think either is a player that anchors a Cup defense. I'd rather take my chances on developing the defenseman we have in the system. Draft and develop, supplement with trades and free agency. |

we just need better players around giroux and voracek to take pressure off of them |

no hurry to sign him imo...I would have waited.... I would like to see the flyers let the market set the price instead of them setting it once in a while.

That was pretty much what I meant, but didn't really say it correctly. By design they were able to supplement bad or lack of drafting by trades and free agents. The cap era we are in now has made that basically impossible (especially after the cap went down) So yes it is the design of the team and managment style that got them here, but it was a design that was working until the league changed. Luckily the Flyers did realize it and have been developing for a few years now, which is why this time is probably the darkest.
Every flaw in the plan the Flyers had was exaggerated by the cap crunch and the time that it hit. For better or worse, the situation FORCED the Flyers to adjust their style and it will be for the better |
