no hurry to sign him imo...I would have waited.... I would like to see the flyers let the market set the price instead of them setting it once in a while. - rinaldo

it was easy to say it then as well. don't see him as an elite 8mm player. never have. |

Thats fine...but I can assure you that the NHL would have. I would have preferred the 7.5 million range but whatever
He got a very fair deal for both sides
Look at the contracts Nash, Perry, CHNBR, Saad, Eberle, Hall are on |

they very well may have. not disputing that..
.though how many teams had that kind of money to give? after this year he would have free agent. his struggles are now almost a full season...if he signed an ext today you think he gets that same deal?
though every once in a while they don't need to jump the gun. take a shot and let him get his offers. then decide what you want to do.
nash and perry have been better players than him. others getting it based on potential and age... though I get what your saying completely. |

That was pretty much what I meant, but didn't really say it correctly. By design they were able to supplement bad or lack of drafting by trades and free agents. The cap era we are in now has made that basically impossible (especially after the cap went down) So yes it is the design of the team and managment style that got them here, but it was a design that was working until the league changed. Luckily the Flyers did realize it and have been developing for a few years now, which is why this time is probably the darkest.
Every flaw in the plan the Flyers had was exaggerated by the cap crunch and the time that it hit. For better or worse, the situation FORCED the Flyers to adjust their style and it will be for the better - YuenglingJagr
I agree, the Flyers in the past were able to trade for quality defenseman, or sign free agents. It's getting tougher and tougher to do that. Like you alluded to earlier, due to the scarcity of available defense talent, the timing has to be perfect. A team can no longer rely on that method. |

Obviously timing it better would have been nicer and maybe saved the Flyers some money. I am not disagreeing with you there. The end result is just going to make us feel a little bit better though (and possibly help flyers with contracts in 5+ years). Was haggling over 1-2 million a year worth potentially losing a franchise RW? I kinda just dont think so. There was no need to get into a Stamkos situation. Ill take what they paid for Jake over having him walk and the Flyers losing him for nothing |

well what kind of haul might he netted at last years deadline? they wouldn't let him walk for nothing imo.
would he have different results playing out his final year and if so what's his value at this years deadline? lots of if's of course though that's what makes it fun. |

The Flyers have gone all in with money in attempts to win and it hasn't worked and atually they are worse off now. But now that Hextall is preaching patience and development people female dog that he isn't doing anything. I am all for patience and development. Can't wait to be out from under the bad contracts |

Flyers picked Cousins ahead of Gaudreau.
#WeRzTtEeM4eVa - jmatchett383
The Flames were apparently the only team willing to draft Gaudreau that high due to the size concerns. If he had been around in the final round, Flyers would have taken a chance on drafting him since it wouldn't been a no-risk pick by that stage. |

I agree with you...but my point is really that the bad contracts are not what is keeping the team from the next level. We say it is "waiting to be out from under the bad contracts" but really it is waiting for our defensive prospects to be NHL contributers |

I just dont really think it is worth thinking about what they would've gotten for him, because trading a 25 or 26 year old winger with a history of elite play most likely would not happen.
We just need to ride it out. He will get back to what he was doing, maybe not quite like it, but he will get hot. He shot 17% in the lock out year. He is shooting a comically low 1% this year.
Same thing with Mason...we see the potential, just have to ride the wave. Look at a goalie like MAF and his YoY numbers. Luckily we have Neuvirth to supplement Mason. We just dont have another top line forward to supplement Jake |

in regards to mason its also possible he reverts back to his last few years in Columbus as well no? |

Bill, I know you have mentioned and theorized about the home/road split this team has played to over the past couple of seasons.
Do you see anything different or have heard anything recently about why that seems like it's changing? Part of me wants to say it was bound to happen, but it would be interesting to knwo if there was an adjustment made |

That's funny. Over the last 3 years or so he is top 10 in league scoring and I think 2nd among RW. Not elite at all. He wasnt just a one year wonder. |

I think you are ignoring the facts if you don't think he has been elite. Maybe the term is thrown around a bit loosely, but he has been one of the very best forwards in the game lately
In regards to Mason...I think its just as likely anyone else suddenly starts to suck. I dont think there is any question that Mason has improved to a level beyond what was happening in Columbus. He is not playing poorly, just not making the ridiculous momentum saves he had been the last season or two. |

his best shift last night was during the 4 on 4 when he was put out with G. He was flying. hmmm - nastyflyergirl
have to agree here. putting Jake w/ a slug like VV is about the only major issue i've had w/ Hak. PEB, ok he's passable skill-wise, but like Friedman said, Jake's game is "disintegrating" right now.
Maybe when Gagner gets back, put him @ LW w/ those 2 and things make more sense. |
