I think from reading what Dan wrote the premise was that the way the team is playing lately they have been one of the best in the league. They've gone into the best team's arenas and won. Places they haven't won in years. They are dominating play during this stretch they're on. If they keep this up they will shoot right up the standings and, yes, have one of the best records in the league all without one of their best offensive players. It's not easy to win 5 games in a row in the NHL and they've done it twice already in this short year. This team is finally believing in themselves and the system and you could see it every game. - BravePackCats27
1 out of every 3 teams in the league has 14+ points in their last ten games. Half the league has 12+ in their last ten. It's not like Florida's record has been anything more than above average the last 10 games. And their last two wins have been in shoot outs. That's pretty far from dominating, it's actually as close to losing as you can get and still win. Florida is still tied for 20th in ROW wins. Trying to say they are one of the best just because they are playing above average is just silly. |

The Panthers have had the worst team in the NHL for their entire existence too. They didn't have a hockey team. What are the fans going to support? You don't just show up to watch guys do nothing for 2 and half hours, you might as well watch paint dry.
But I know to some it doesn't matter, the Panthers are the bane of their existence. Man, I can't imagine how much some people have no life to obsess about the Panthers so. lol |

11th in a field of 30 isn't one of the best. Above average or good, sure. But 11 of 30 is still closer to being average than being the top. From a points perspective, Florida is closer to being 30th in the league than they are to being #1.
Florida is good, but they only qualify as "one of the best" if that's basically what you call anyone on pace to make the playoffs. - Antilles
They are also tied for 5th in the league in goal differential with a +14. So there are also numbers to back up the "one of the best teams in the league". |

Let's be honest here, this is a solid market for an average team. Something we have rarely seen. Non traditional market, crap product..I say the fans have been VERY good. |

Yeah, it's not like they ever went to the Stanley Cup Finals.... oh wait.
But it's not like they recently won their division.... oh wait.

Sure. And Ducks have the best penalty kill in the league so they are one of the best teams in the league.
Winning is what matters. It's what gets you into the playoffs, and what gets you the Cup. Dallas and Washington are the teams doing it the most, so right now they are the best teams in the league. Not every single team that looks like it will make playoffs and has a stat or two they are doing well but no where near the top in is the best in the league.
Florida is good. Save saying they are among the best until they actually are. |

Blackhawks vs Panthers in the Finals and Dale Tallon drops the puck for the ceremonial face off in game 1. |

Well obviously this is important to you so let me just clear a few things up.
"Yeah, it's not like they ever went to the Stanley Cup Finals.... oh wait.
But it's not like they recently won their division.... oh wait."
And so you're saying this doesn't prove they have been the worst team in the league their entire existence? Let throw out some more stats to add to yours: 4 playoff appearances in 20 year history of their franchise.... FOUR. They have gotten past the first round of the playoffs.... once, in the entire history of their franchise (that one run to the cup finals you mentioned, IN 1996, 20 YEARS AGO).
That one division crown they won was after 17 years of making the playoffs only 3 times, and they lost in the first round that time as well. Then they proceeded to finish last and next to last the next 2 seasons in the entire league, and haven't been to the playoffs since that division title. Every other season outside of those 4 playoffs appearances they have either finished in the middle or the bottom of the league.
Oh wait... let's compare them to say... Ottawa, who came in the league the same time they did: president's trophies - one, conference titles titles - one, stanley cup appearances - one, division titles - 4, playoff appearances - 14.
Oh wait... let's compare them to their closest neighbor, Tampa Bay, who came into the league one year before they did: stanley cup titles - one, division titles - two, conference titles - two, playoff appearances - eight.
Do you need me go on, or does this help you out? |

And to address this little part (since it is so important to you), sure there are stats to say they are further down the standings, just like there are stats to say they are one of the best teams in the league.
That's the whole point, if you feel they are not one of the best in the league, fine, but that's not going to change anyone else's mind who might feel different, since all of this is subjective anyway. |

Where they the worst team in the league the year they went to the Cup finals? Where they the worst team in the league the year they were the best team in their division? If the answer is no, then they haven't spent their entire existence as the worst team in the league. You pointing out that their success hasn't been consistent doesn't make them the worst in the league every single year.

Responding to posts that are in response to me doesn't make it important to me. I'm giving logical counterpoints. You are the one making comments about me while I continue a discussion about hockey.
And no, the standings aren't subjective. They are an objective measure of how successful a team is at winning. And there are not stats to say Florida is further down the standings. It's literally where they stand. 11th in a field of 30. |

So now are they one of the best teams in the league? If you say yes, then it is subjective. How can they go from not one of the best teams in the league to one of the best teams in the league in one game? If you say no, then you are also proving yourself wrong again, because they are now 6th in the league in the standings, now what, we're going to go by goal differential and such, the stuff you dismissed earlier? Saying they are one of the best teams in the league is a subjective statement, because he did not say they are the #12 team in the league, or the #7 team in the league, etc., etc..... He didn't say anything about the standings.
And regarding the "were they the worst team in the league", so you're saying they haven't had the least amount of success in total since they've been in the league? |

Yeah no new blog in days when the Panthers are playing their best hockey in forever? Beating tough teams after tough teams at home and on the road, without one of their best players, and playing great hockey that's fun to watch and it's dead in here. Sorry Dan but I remember a blog you wrote a few months back about apologizing how few blogs you wrote and promise to do it more...so much for that. |
