Coburn was a better defensive player, his offensive game never really translated to the NHL, though. He had a decent season or two of production, but not really exceptional. I don't think Sanheim will have that issue.
I think Sanheim has the potential to be a top pair offensive defenseman, but he's got work to do in his own end. If he does it, he could end up being a very well rounded guy. But his speed and offensive abilities are likely what gets him to the NHL, not his play in his own end. In that case he'd be more similar to a guy like Del Zotto than Coburn.
Provorov is more well rounded, and more of the steady guy with high end ability than the speedy/flashy type of game Sanheim displays. I think Provorov could be similar to Hedman, although maybe not with as high a ceiling. - Jsaquella
I think Provorov could turn out to be a lot like Eric Desjardins. Not a franchise #1 but a quality top pair guy who just does everything well. Sanheim's style of play reminds me a bit of Keith Yandle, though the kid has a bigger frame. Either way, those 2 plus Ghost and Morin have me very optimistic about the future of the Flyers D. |

Pretty much every organization in hockey uses the old boys club approach to some extent. Holmgren is a member of that club, and if people are too blind to realize that, then it's on them.
Hextall has changed many things. First the culture of quick fixes and using free agency to address perceived weaknesses. Shifting to an emphasis on drafting and building from the ground up, rather than trades and free agency. They're focusing on skill and skating in the draft, rather than grit & heart. That's a big swing in and of itself.
As far as coaching goes, you have a NHL neophyte who has no experience in the league. Giving him experienced veteran coaches, already in place helps him. He can also evaluate them and decide on them moving forward, rather than rashly firing and replacing them off the bat. if they are an issue, then Hakstol should be able to figure it out. - Jsaquella
if we're gonna have a good ol' boy club in place lets at least have one that can ice a competitive team.

Manning shouldn't be singled out. The majority of the team was bad. Much easier to single out who played well. - MJL

Sanheim was definitely used more today. I would say he and Dermott (who I really like actually. Excellent Leafs pick) were played more, with each alternating on the PP and w/ the 7th d man. Sanheim played more on PP1 though. Still bottom pairing.
Man is he electric though. Like a Ghost or Karlsson, the best thing a coach can do is let him do what he does, even if mistakes are made. He'll activate a ton and play forward at times, but you just can't leash him in. No other d man on the Canada team possesses his natural dynamism. In his own zone...bit of an adventure. When the puck gets up the ice though.....fireworks. Realistically, he'd be playing over one of (#1 All Situations Superstar) Hicketts, Chabot, Hickey, or Fleury. Hickey and Fleury play very conservative games I feel like, and clearly the coach prefers that. Hicketts is good, but it's heavy favoritism. Chabot is a very good 19 year old.
Konecny reminds me of Jake with a much better PEB and VDV. He is being forced to play safe, chip and chase hockey with emphasis on the cycle. Shame. Still looked really good. Few nice dangles, consistently amazing passes, and burner level speed. |

They've been competitive for the bulk of 47 years of existence. They're on a 8-3-2 run. They're in year two of a mini-rebuild. You complained about signings like Lecavalier, then when they change course and get away from that, you complain that they're not competitive.
You've been sort of like a husband who wife fed him steak every night & complained it gave him an upset stomach, so the doctor said feed him chicken & then he complained that it was too healthy.
Holmgren had his good and bad as a GM & asst GM. One thing he was good at was scouting. Might as well use him if you have to pay him, whatever his title, he's not running the show. |

Just because they made bad free agent signings doesn't mean they have to abandon that avenue of acquiring assets. They've whiffed on draft picks miserably, i don't see anyone crying for them to stop drafting. It can't be one or the other kinda hasto be both. And the problem with your analogy is in this case, the wife would've been feeding me bad steak. Also they have built/acquired talent through the draft. It's been good and bad but they are too stubborn or give up too early with players. The timing and the discretion has never been quite right with this fromt office. |

Still complaining about Homer heading into 2016 is like walking into Arbys and complaining that the horsey sauce you got there three years ago gave you the runs. It's gone man.
Maybe you salvaged your dockers from the accident the best you could(AMac) but the undies are just too far gone(Vinny). Let it go. |

Manning is what he is...not sure why there's so much hate for the player . He works hard, but has a lot of warts on his game....he has improved this year and the Flyers needed to know what they had. Some nights I guess some mistakes stand out more then others but it ain't from lack of effort. He might just be a very good AHL guy who can fill in once in a while. |
