Manning is what he is...not sure why there's so much hate for the player . He works hard, but has a lot of warts on his game....he has improved this year and the Flyers needed to know what they had. Some nights I guess some mistakes stand out more then others but it ain't from lack of effort. He might just be a very good AHL guy who can fill in once in a while. - landros 2
That's exactly what he is but he's stuck in the NHL at present although for the life of me (other than Columbus) I can't think who would claim him. Could happen I guess.

Thats pretty much what he is. If this were baseball, we'd call him a Quadruple A player. Too good for the minors, not good enough for the majors. He gives you his level best game in and game out, but you know what? Its not quite good enough. I'm glad the Flyers gave him a shot and a chance to find out if he could play, and I'm ok with riding out the rest of the season with him because a better alternative just might not be there this year.
Just because they made bad free agent signings doesn't mean they have to abandon that avenue of acquiring assets. They've whiffed on draft picks miserably, i don't see anyone crying for them to stop drafting. It can't be one or the other kinda hasto be both. And the problem with your analogy is in this case, the wife would've been feeding me bad steak. Also they have built/acquired talent through the draft. It's been good and bad but they are too stubborn or give up too early with players. The timing and the discretion has never been quite right with this fromt office. - JoeRussomanno
If you think the timing and discretion has never been quite right, do you think the timing is right to use free agency this upcoming off season? They also haven't abandoned it. The Flyers signed Neuvirth and Medvedev as free agents this past off season. Hextall has put a plan and a philosophy in place. Isn't it fair to give him some time? It's really hard to understand where exactly your issue is.

The Flyers are a competitive team. - MJL
They sure are...when the effort is there they can play with most teams. The weak spots stand out but they also have some strengths to build around.

I can't help but think Manning is where he is because they don't want to shake up the AHL group and it just isn't worth it to go out and trade for a 6th D man.

The Flyers have made a commitment to playing Manning in the NHL. They're not going to abandon that, less than half way through the season. While he has certainly had some rough spots, I don't think he has been as bad as many make him out to be.

"This front office" has been in place for a season and a half. Not really sure which picks Hextall has whiffed on, but whatever. Also, given the Flyers cap situation since Hexy took over, I'm not sure which free agents you expected him to sign. He's added Schultz, MDZ & Medvedev as cheaper free agents, and the cap is still pretty tight.
IMO, Hextall has handled free agency fairly well. To fill secondary holes, until they can get rid of some of the bigger bad deals. Not sure what else you like him to do.

Defensive schemes that slow the game down and keep things to the boards help.
It allows less talented teams to have a better chance at winning. Negating somewhat the talent of the better players.

Look when they can start winning some playoff series I'll be the first one to congratulate them.
