I agree.
I think you could see some changes to the assistants if they miss the playoffs this year. Hakstol will have a year of experience.
Also in regards to people thinking Holmgren got a "promotion". Yes he did in a sense. So did Howie for the eagles. I saw the move as inserting Hextall into the GM role sooner rather then later. When he came back to Philly as an assistant GM role almost everyone had said he was going to take over for Holmgren some time. I think once they missed the playoffs they wanted to get this moving forward with Hextall as GM. - J35Bacher
Holmgren did also recognize what needed to happen, the drafting started with him. He had no choice after his first attempts did not materialize, but I doubt he wouldve been able to keep his finger off the trigger this long. I also think Hextall has a better record of drafting that proves he took over at the right time |

Correct.
Holmgren did start to see he needed to change the way the team is built.
I also think Murphy and Lappy's deals end this year. So as far as the assistants we could see new assistants moving forward. |

With all of these Simmonds rumors it's given me thought on the actual event occurring. At first, I was very against it but I have given more thought and decided I'm ok w it if it were to happen. Along with Simmonds I would also move both Schenns, Streit, and also Read. With the cap space opening from all of those trades, I'd really like to see who Hexy would consider or could possibly bring in through free agency. |

A few years ago...man he's really fallen. If Chicago couldn't get him to work out, can't see him working out anywhere else. Wasted potential |

There was really no other options than to start the drafting process. I don't give much credit to Holmgren. He used up his buyouts and was still capped out with a mediocre at best team. I give him credit for the weber OS, but ultimately it failed and burnt bridges with it. The cap forced holmgrens hand. The light bulb went on 10 years too late. |

IMO, the front office culture already started to change when Hextall took over. He is moving this team forward much differently than Holmgren did and is actually attempting to build a team with youth through the draft. Do you disagree? - funmaster18
Actually, in reality the youth rebuild if you will started under Holmgren. He drafted a lot of the prospects, and young players, and traded to add Simmonds, Voracek, and B Schenn. The turn around started under Holmgren. He only gets credit for the bad moves, and not the good that he did. |

Time will tell and while i respect your opinion, I personally don't feel it. Building through the draft is great but to me it's deeper than that. I'm talking about the boneheaded stubbornness to insist on "their" ppl. Look at the coaching change, the whole staff should've been dismissed and a new one brought in, instead hakstoll gets saddled with the sane guys from berube's tenure. I find that a poor management decision, especially bringing in a college level guy like hakstoll. How is he to turn it around with the same old regime still there? Furthermore, the picks and prospects are nice but hexstall can't get any credit until those players actually play and play well at the NHL level. So he's bought himself some time but not all these kids are gonna pan out, that u can almost be sure of. So at some point he's going to have to go out and get free agents. So no, I'm not sold yet. - JoeRussomanno
You're assuming that Hakstol didn't have any say in who his assistants would be. |

From what I've read waiving Manning isn't enough to get us under the cap when Streit comes back were talking about 625,000 that's why Hexy has him here this year as a number 7 who can fill in until prospects are ready or he can deal someone on his terms, they need to Waive someone making at least a million , hopefully an Umberger, maybe have a look at Gagner again. Might have to carry 8 D till right deal comes up , as Hexy has shown he's patient. Ghost was excellent on PP again, minus one bad pass but that happens but he definetely has work to do in his own end, could tell Manning hadn't played in a bit as was rusty in first period as well , Thought Meddy was pretty average after such a good game in St. Louis , expect whole team better against Ducks. |

According to www.hockeyscap.com's armchair GM tool, waiving and sending Manning down clears just enough space to activate Streit & keep Gostisbehere.
If it's not enough, they can simply waive both Manning and one of Gagner or Umberger, then activate Streit and recall Colin McDonald and keep Gostisbehere and avoid having Lecavalier as the top spare forward.
The thing is, after losing Porter, Hextall seems loathe to risk losing a guy he can use as an asset for nothing. |

The media up in Canada is great at stirring up trade rumors. "Montreal Typical". I would not call Simmonds an untouchable, but he's important to the team and could probably be had at an overpayment. But I wouldn't count on Simmonds ending up in Montreal.
As for Free Agents, I wouldn't expect any big splashes unless someone like Vinny, Umberger, or even AMac get moved or bought out. And even then, it's going to be limited to role player types, I'd think.
I think the era of the Flyers trying to buy themselves a championship are over. Too many risks are involved and you can't just buy your mistakes out without hampering your on ice product. |

If the Flyers were going to waive a player to make room for activating Streit, it would've needed to happen today. It takes 24 hours for a player to clear waivers if I'm not mistaken. |

It's not even the regular media. It's a radio host in Calgary with 300 followers. None of the bigger media has even mentioned it. McKenzie said today he'd heard nothing and would be surprised if Simmonds got traded.
I agree too with the free agency stance. Too many teams are locking key guys into contracts early. The guys that get to UFA now are either older guys looking at one last big payday or young guys that had a big contract year explosion and want to cash in.

Going the free agent route is cool if you are a player or two away from a real title contending team. It's an acceptable risk at that point.
I don't think building through Free Agency is going to be viable approach, going forward. |
