I'd argue that more defencemen drafted after the first round have made the NHL versus those drafted in the first round.
- Scooby_Doo

I don't know if that's true, but it does seem like many more defenseman and goalies picked in later rounds become elite than forwards do.

True enough, I looked it up and thought it said 6th, but looked again. But who is the last dman we picked in the 2nd round even? BPA is great, but how is that working for the oilers?
- neem55

Their issue lies in that they haven't picked anyone after their four firsts, Draisaitl at third or Darrnell Nurse at seventh. Maybe Klefbom, but that's it.

You draft the bpa and then look for a trade to acquire that dman... Oilers might have got the bpa, but were afraid to take the next step.

2010 draft.
2 defencemen drafted in first round with 100+ games.
4 defencemen drafted after first round with 100 + games.

Point proven.

Edit.

Would you take Gudbranson and Fowler or
Faulk and Klingberg?

I am specifically referring to top d-men. It got lost in previous coversation on the thread, but there are not too many top guys outside of the 1st round that are 1/2 guys.

Edit: Lefty has pointed out the 2nd round has produced 3 out my top ten d in the league however.

My top 10: (going forward, not just current)
1 Doughty 1st round
2 Kieth 3rd round
3 Hedman 1st round
4 Suter 1st round
5 Karlsson 1st
6 Josi 2nd
7 Ekblad 1st
8 OEL 1st
9 Jones 1st
10 Seabrook 1st

IMO only 4 of these guys were "expected" to be studs, the other half were high picks and panned out. SUbban is a 2nd rounder too, just outside of my top 10 with Faulk who is also 2nd round, weber a 2nd too.

Faulk
Gudbranson
Klingberg
Fowler

But i like shut down guys more than most probably, and don't like defensive liabilities as much.

Klingberg might win the Norris this year.

I'd say.

klingberg, like Karlsson, is simply not someone I want in a 7 game series as much as Gudbranson. He might get better at D and he may be a Norris finalist, as they seem to think Karlsson is better than Doughty/kieth last year (which is a joke).

I don't understand the need for the edit, the point was already proven. You're the type of guy that tops his ice cream with more ice cream.

After I posted he said stud d men come from the first round. So I was proving the two best d men from that draft didn't.

2010 was the first draft I looked at. I then looked at 2009... Hopefully he doesn't look there.

Anyone able to watch the complete WD post game tonight? Tried playing the video and it fecks up just as WD starts answering a question about Pedan being an intriguing player.

It sounds like WD likes what Biega brings.

Honestly, I thought my top 10 spoke for itself, but elite players typically get picked in the first two rounds, d or forward, in every draft. But what i also notice is that guys that don't get hyped get picked in the first and become stars all the time, this is why I hope they get a couple first round draft picks.

Yes but that was your top 10... You can manipulate that any way you want....

You left off Weber (Shea not Yannick or Mike) and Subban.

yeah, only because of the disclaimer of going forward and I did mention Weber was a 2nd rounder. 1st 2nd round are what I'm talking about using on dmen.

edit: Also, I realized top ten d is hard!

Last season he was good for the first part of his call up but his play dipped a bit at the end. he has been even more steady this season.

fiesty, heart, whatever it is called, he is engaged in the play.

I don't know what you mean by going forward. Keith is 2 years older, Suter is the same age...

5 of the top 10 defencemen scoring leaders this year were drafted outside the first round.

Again, i'd rather have rounded guys than top scorers, thats a personal preference for me. How many of those guys were drafted after the 2nd round?
the point about going forward is somewhat true, I think all of those guys will be good for another 6-8 years though IMO and I prefer Seabrook/Suter to Weber but he is probably #11 for me

Again, for me this is a says you comment. Chychrun was the concensus #2 of McKenzie and many others, this tells me he is pretty darn good. Suter wasn't guy drafted top five like Ekblad or Doughty. He was drafted 7th, but didn't have hype like those two and is a stud. NObody really knows how these guys will shake down in the show till they get here, that's the bottom line, but more 1st rounders make it than any other (obviously) thus I think we should be picking d in the first round this year and next as we havent done so for over a decade.
- neem55

U only pick D if it makes sense or its always BPA in the 1st.
We need D n Wing now

Maybe...

Try naming other studs after the 1st round.

Shayne Gostisbhere on the flyers, small sample, but being a third round pick cant complain about him.
Sami Vantanen was a fourth rounder i believe.
Cant forget about Ben Hutton in the fifth

The Kings give me hope that you don't need multiple top three picks to win a Stanley Cups, but, they do reinforce you need a #1 dman.
