I don't know if that's true, but it does seem like many more defenseman and goalies picked in later rounds become elite than forwards do. - CubanBuffet
Of course there would be. 30 first rounder players only , 360 players drafted after that every year. The odds are with the later rounds. 6 to 1 |

I am specifically referring to top d-men. It got lost in previous coversation on the thread, but there are not too many top guys outside of the 1st round that are 1/2 guys.
Edit: Lefty has pointed out the 2nd round has produced 3 out my top ten d in the league however.
My top 10: (going forward, not just current)
1 Doughty 1st round
2 Kieth 3rd round
3 Hedman 1st round
4 Suter 1st round
5 Karlsson 1st
6 Josi 2nd
7 Ekblad 1st
8 OEL 1st
9 Jones 1st
10 Seabrook 1st
IMO only 4 of these guys were "expected" to be studs, the other half were high picks and panned out. SUbban is a 2nd rounder too, just outside of my top 10 with Faulk who is also 2nd round, weber a 2nd too. - neem55
You have shown 10 Dmen over the last 10 years that were drafted in the first round playing now. There are 210 Dmen playing in the NHL every year at an average of 7 per team. So of the 2100 Roster spots that have been filled over the last 10 years let's say 70 spots have been filled by players drafted in the first round.i am sure other first round busts like Clendenning have played a few games so let's round it up to 100 out of 2100 spots have been first rounders. That is not very good odds. |

WD "We played right into their hands". Every team has injuries and has to figure out a way to overcome them. You can bet that dressing room is going though turmoil. |

Canucks 14 wins 24 losses in a playoff spot, while a team like the Oilers who have more wins than us sit 4 points behind.
Thanks for screwing up the integrity Bettman. |

Anaheim will play the same game against Van that LA did. Should be interesting. |

Aside from about 7 or 8 teams the NHL as a product is really becoming watered down. It is becoming more about losing that winning.looking at the Canucks we are not far removed from being an AHL roster.
Empty buildings are showing up more often. The officiating dictates the flow of the game. Even though I like 3 on 3 , it is just another gimmick. I am not sure in the long run this will help the game. What ever happened to Winner gets points ,losers don't .
I hate the fact that Canucks are still in the running when we clearly have a bottom 5 team. |

That will play out on it's own. There are better teams behind us in the standings. |

I agree it's getting tougher and tougher to watch with every passing season. Instead of teams having 4 real solid lines and playing well 75% of the time we have a plethora of teams that are 2 line hockey clubs and .500 at best which is most of the league. I understand the difficulty in todays cap era to put together 4 great lines but still...the product is suffering badly. Teams play for the loser point and it's pathetic to watch plus the referees controlling games with timely...brutal calls. If Buttman and his merry band of idiots allow ads on the jerseys I might be done with the league for good. Greedy little wiener.
I work between two high schools here and losing is accepted and becoming part of an upcoming culture...there is no room for failure anymore in terms of everybody gets a pat on the back regardless...it's sad. |

It is not enough to lose anymore. You have to lose better than the next guy. I understand some thinking on here about not wanting to tank. It is quickly becoming part of the culture and part of the game.
The way you get rid of it is all 14 teams that miss the playoffs have an even shot at top draft picks. Pull names from the hat of an even weighed lotto to select the order.
What has happened in Edmonton is beyond unfair to the rest of the league. 45 years in the league Vancouver has 0 number one picks . |

Something needs to change that's for sure. That would be a good start. |

I like what they done with this years format, the last place team could actually end up picking 4th overall instead of a guaranteed 2nd overall.
I know the Oilers are an easy target but let's remember they finished third last twice and won the lottery, extremely fortunate! |

Yup...with the changes to the draft you just compete until the very end with what you've got. They (Benning) can trade some veteran players for picks at the TDL, but you never stop competing and throw in the towel...that's unacceptable. |

That's what I meant. The math says more d men go in later rounds, and even lots of studs like Weber, Subban, Klingberg and Faulk. |

yep. something wrong with intentional tanking and getting rewarded for losing. that is the way it is being run now, looking forward to a different approach. |

With the regular team1040 guys on holidays, it's actually become tolerable to listen to the station for once. Some of the fill ins aren't nearly as annoying as the regular guys. |
