I was trying to post a link to the 81-82 Smythe standings, when 3 teams made it with records below .500 |

Miracle on Manchester......beat the Oilers.
In a rare occurrence, both teams had to board the same plane heading back to Edmonton (charter flights were not the norm back then for NHL teams). The flight left at 1:30am, and the game was to be played that night on April 13. The Oilers were seated in the back and the Kings sat in the front. |

The Miracle is, the flight is between games 4 & 5.
Times have changed.
According to Bob Miller, he said, "I was so excited that I wanted to call home, but the only pay phone I could find was near the Oilers dressing room. The Oilers wives and girlfriends were in tears as I shouted to my wife over the phone, 'wasn't that a great game?'" |

Dude half the city is behind a rebuild and a tank. If you are still stuck in 1994 fine, but some of us want impact players when we draft and not just the servicable type.
To sit and cheer for this team that is one of the worst in the league is fine, but more advanced fans see the benifit of a top 5 draft pick for the next couple of years. |

It's difficult because it's like watching paint dry, I get it! Transitioning out the old and slowing injecting youth that's ready takes time unless you go full teardown, which they've said they're not gonna do and I fully agree with that. - LeftCoaster
I agree to an extent. I would like to keep Burrows to teach a few guys how to play his style, but waive Higgins. We need vets the young kids can look up to, not down on. All Higgins can teach them is how to coast into retirement. |

I don't cheer to lose. Simple.
I want change but at a reasonable rate. It's called being realistic. Waiving anyone who played more than 2 seasons and recalling the entire farm is beyond ridiculous. Change does not happen overnight.
I guess I'm just not that 'advanced'. |

Finally you realize it
jk
But I don't think you could argue(let alone suggest) that Higgins is an upgrade over Gaunce. Higgins is no longer needed on the PK, and he no longer provides scoring. He isn't even scoring at a 4th line level. Waive him, bring up Gaunce. I don't see Grenier being an upgrade over burrows at this time, however i would like to see Burrows sit 3-4 games and Grenier play in his stead.
Trades that I think would help us BIG TIME come TDL would be Hansen, Vrbata, Hammer. Hammer is worth a 1st+, i know a lot of you disagree, but you are stupid to think so. Hammer Is better than a 5/6 dman on any team, and an upgrade on most teams #4 and some #3 dmen. Lesser defensemen got more than a 1st last year TDL. He would also waive to go to a team he would look to resign in, unless he plans to retire at the end of the season.
Vrbata is worth up to a 1st, most likely a 2nd + B prospect or 3rd. The fact that his contract ends at the end of the season makes him the perfect rental as teams don't have to shed salary to keep him in the offseason. This in itself has value for players like him.
Hansen is having a career year, and has proven that he can play on any line, and in any situation. He would get us a 1st + prospect due to term with such a low cap hit for a player who can slot into 3/2/1 lines as needed/injuries during playoffs and season. Only downside to trading him is that we need players like him to teach young guys how to be on the ice. This is a situation where you weigh to options. He will be useless and in decline when we are ready to compete. Would he be better served to quicken our rebuild, or better served teaching the youngins when they make the show? |

The way to win is draft and development. It has been said a thousand times on here. Whick is better dafting top 10 or 15-25? It is simple math.
To draft top 10 you need to lose. |

nashville maybe. we don't have any need for burrows. our healthy scratch scored 18 for NJ last year (although he's still junk) but I don't see anyone in our lineup that I'd take out for burrows.

Hanging on to Higgins and Burrows is the same as hanging on to Kevin Lowe. When you put loyalty ahead of the well being of a team it seldom works out.
Burrows as an agitator had high value . Burrows as the goal scorer play maker , the last couple of years has a lot less value |

I don't know how to fix this kind of thinking. How did Kane and Toews work out? How about Sid and Malkin? For every failure you will find 10 success stories.

Is that the name you have on your Oilers jersey?
I would have thought Smyth as you like crying so much. |

See again failing to see things.
I was trying to point out that Oilers dedication to someone who had stayed way too long and was hurting the club , much like some of the Canucks favorites . You take it as I am an Oiler fan with a Kevin Lowe jersey. |
