That is the trade off. They get a cheaper hit for longer. That gives them an extra 1 mill to lock up Stamkos.... The can also demote AMac if they want to and save an extra 950k. So 1,950,000. Sometimes I feel you argue with people just for the sake of arguing. That is all you seem to do here.

There's no trade off for TB. They're not gaining cap space, they are losing it in making that deal because MacDonald's contract is 2 years longer. In the 18/19 season, TB is completely free of Carle's contract. By trading Carle for MacDonald, TB, instead of having zero cap space used for Carle, since he's gone, they'd now have MacDonald's cap hit minus whatever salary is retained by the Flyers. They aren't going to do that to save 500K in cap space for the next two seasons.
Right now, here is TB's commitment with Carle
16/17 5.5M
17/18 5.5M
18/19 0
19/20 0
Now if they trade Carle for MacDonald, not including any retained salary, which wouldn't change anything
16/17 5M
17/18 5M
18/19 5M
19/20 5M
Going from 0 to 5M in years 18/19 and 19/20 is not saving cap space, and would not make saving 1M in cap space in years 16/17 and 17/18 worth it.
If they waive and demote MacDonald, they're still carrying 4M or so of dead cap space for those last two years, versus 0 on the cap if they keep Carle, and they then can use that money for someone else.
