each and every one of those guys got dropped onto a team that they were the only new ones getting added to really. All of the structure was already in place. None of them were on a team where 2 or 3 of their linemates were ALSO brand new to the team.

Oh and how many of them are playing for a coach who is also in his first year with the team and players?

I have a friend who has read all of the books explain a LOT to me after I saw it and said i wasn't that in to it.
The Rey thing is a really easy explanation that i assume tis basically going to be covered, if not the main story, next movie.
Also, the character that died wasn't killed in the books. That was a contractual thing with the studios.

But did all of their linemates need to adjust to a new team, new scenery, new coach, new system as well? Not exactly the same. That said, you're still not completely wrong.

Point is, no books other than the one that came out this year (Aftermath) have any bearing on the characters. The writing teams may have nods towards the old books, but if there's info in them, it doesn't mean it's true in the new series. ie. No books will say who Rey's parents are
