Some of the books were really good. The Yuuzan Vong (sp) war was one that I wanted to be made into a movie. In the books there might be parallels to the current characters but they weren't adapted. Those books were also not made by Lucas, they wre just approved. Lucas had his own ideas of what happened after ROTJ that Disney said no thank you to.

To say that kessel's 22pts in 38gp is better than kanes 13pts in 29 games is ridiculous. It may be equal but i dont even think its comparable.

Kessel is a perennial 30-35 goal scorer in the NHL, an olympian. He is on pace for what 25? Playing with crosby and or malkin? Struggling a bit?

Pilot could be that she has flown before. Not too sure if that was addressed, I know she said she hadn't flown the Falcon.

As for the lightsaber, this one I was wondering about until I realized her main weapon was a staff. Not exactly the same (I'm not exactly sure about the weight of the beam but that's something that's never been addressed in anything other than like Mythbusters). That said, she at least had some proficiency in that type of weapon. She even uses it like someone who was used to a longer staff would, going for stabbing attacks instead of too much swinging.

All I know is, the books mean absolutely nothing. They made that very clear from day 1 that the extended universe is dead and considered "legends"

Edit: UNLESS you're talking about novels that directly relate to this movie. Aftermath and I believe a few other books are canon and may talk about the characters in this movie. I don't know, I don't read those. The other books that talk about the New Republic and the return of the Emperor and Dath Plageus are all legend.

my buddy claims the movie had a lot of nods so some pretty deep geeked out stuff that people like me wouldn't catch.
He feels like Disney is trying to finally satisfy all of the people who have been in to the franchise for 30+ years rather than so stupid Jar-jar bunks/George Lucas crap.

You got to admit, there's piles of books out there disney can grab from. And they have the money to pay the authors.
I really got out of Star wars once the prequels came out.
I didn't even mind Ewoks back in the day.
