Like you said.
Not a whole lot of other choices. - dadeadhead
I'd invest and diversify. Could also put it in some bonds as well.
On a serious note, one thing I'd really want to do is get a company going in the city. Get some jobs for some people, help keep the city and the people in the region going the right way. |

A mil would be included in "the kind of money we are talking about". - buffalofan19
Well I figured I've already make close to a mil in my lifetime and they say the 1st mil is always hardest.
So here's to an easy next mil. |

If I win I will actively pursue buying the Buffalo Sabres from Terry and Kim.
First thing I will do is fire Murray immediately.
I would take over GM duties.
Then fire Bylsma.
Then hire Ted Nolan.
Then re-sign Mike Weber to a 4 year 6 mill contract.

Credit Unions are going to be pretty safe for quite a while. The interest rates won't be as high, but with the kind of money we are talking about, that won't matter. - buffalofan19
Could you imagine the Christmas(holiday) party at the credit union the year a powerball winner decides to dump all his money there

If I won, the first thing I would do is hide.
I know this guy didn't win, but still. Bringing attention to yourself is the worst thing you could do. - buffalofan19
I'd lawyer up, call #1. Financial advisor, call #2. Figure out how much I need to pull in about $750k annually in dividends, spend about 5-10, and give the rest away. |

The first thing I would do, before I even claim the money is go to my cell phone carrier of choice, buy a new phone outright, change my number, and deactivate the old one. Then I would probably follow a pattern similar to yours. |

That is a solid plan. Except the give away part. Have call #2 set up a trust with investments for the give away part. |

All this talk about "tanking".
Well, I stand and applaud the NHL for creating the concept that they have now to try and prevent teams from deliberately "tanking".
Now you could pick all the way at the 4th spot and I like it very much so.
More professional sports leagues should begin to seriously look at putting the same type of systems in place when it comes to their own particular drafts.
Deliberate losers should not be awarded, they should be laughed at and I laughed at Murray last year when he lost the 1st pick, McDavid, who will IMO turn out to be the best player in last years entry draft by far.
If Murray deliberately "tanks" again this year I hope karma visits again and gives Murray the 4th pick.
Sucks when you have a General Manager that apparently only knows how to build a "winner" by purposely losing to draft high because he has shown already that his trade skills resemble something that I flushed down my toilet at 6 AM this morning. - Pluviophile
the draft lottery is the worst thing in sports. The fact that a good team can have injuries to stars/bad stretches and just miss out on playoffs have the chance to get 1st overall is a joke. The reason why the worst team drafts 1st is so they can become competitive and win games. You're pretty much punishing teams for being bad. Unreal lol. Definitely with this being a salary cap league. One of the few proven ways to get out of the basement is through the draft. And usually players picked 1st or 2nd overall are much better than those picked 3,4,5 etc. |

Sorry for the hockey talk, but Kris Baker says Estephan has goals in 6 straight games. Longest prospect goal streak for us since Possler had 7 in a row. Murray might have hit on a late pick. |

True, but the odds of them winning is minuscule. Can it happen, yeah that's why it's a lotto. But it is good to deter tanking. If it wasn't there I would have said we should tank years ago. I actually like the system in place now, where you can be last and the 1st 3 picks are lotto picks.
I'd almost be okay with a playoff format where the teams that are eliminated play for the picks. A week off between the regular season and playoffs and in that time you take the bottom 4 teams and have a mini tournament. Can't imagine the players would be on board with it. Who wants to play more hockey for a pick. |

Assuming you have a lawyer and/or Financial Advisor you really trust, chances are he or she would refer you to someone in his or her own network that is trustworthy, and they would be on the same page. |

Igor Larionov thinks that Laine and Puljujarvi are both better than Matthews. I don't know enough about them to disagree, but I haven't heard many mirror that statement. To get one of them though would be a real nice touch |

the playoff format would be awful. I thought the point of the draft was for the teams with the lowest amount of skill to add skill. Its supposed to keep things balanced. If the teams finishing at the bottom were drafting 8-14 every year they would be stuck "like the sabres were for a while".
We tanked two years in a row and both times got #2. Meanwhile Edmonton consistently wins it and yet they were never the last placed team. If there was no lotto we wouldn't be complaining about the Oilers getting the top pick yearly. |

Edmonton is a special case. If you don't have a lottery why wouldn't you have an AHL team and just guarantee you get that guy? As a Sabres fan I've dreaded the lottery the last 2 years but as a fan of the game I know it's for the best. I'd say that if you win the lottery you shouldn't be allowed to win again for 5 years. But I don't want 10 teams vying for last place on purpose each year and I think if you didn't have the lottery you'd see that more. |
