Edmonton is a special case. If you don't have a lottery why wouldn't you have an AHL team and just guarantee you get that guy? As a Sabres fan I've dreaded the lottery the last 2 years but as a fan of the game I know it's for the best. I'd say that if you win the lottery you shouldn't be allowed to win again for 5 years. But I don't want 10 teams vying for last place on purpose each year and I think if you didn't have the lottery you'd see that more.

i don't. the simple fix would have been to keep it the way it was. but once you win the draft you cant win it again for 5 years. I think thats plenty fair...

the draft lottery is the worst thing in sports. The fact that a good team can have injuries to stars/bad stretches and just miss out on playoffs have the chance to get 1st overall is a joke. The reason why the worst team drafts 1st is so they can become competitive and win games. You're pretty much punishing teams for being bad. Unreal lol. Definitely with this being a salary cap league. One of the few proven ways to get out of the basement is through the draft. And usually players picked 1st or 2nd overall are much better than those picked 3,4,5 etc.

I get that Smitty, I really do.
But then on the other hand you have GM's like Murray that make a mockery of the system and blatantly trade off good parts and bring in bad parts.
Something needed to be done because of GM's like Murray that feel the only way that he can build a winning team is to deliberately fail and then get rewarded for making a mockery of a game so rich in history that would squash Murray like the spineless cockroach that he is.
Hard for this guy to respect someone like that.

Arizona and Toronto did the same thing... Teams have been doing this for year. Only difference is this year had a high profile prospect at the level of crosby.

Also I'm not really sure how trading UFA's for picks is making a mockery of the game. This is also done yearly by teams that don't have a shot at the playoffs. What would be a mockery is to not trade pending ufa's to just watch them leave for nothing at the end of the season. What good parts did he exactly trade off? We were already bare when he took over "miller left". Fact is he took over a team in total rebuild mode. He completed the rebuild and definitely tried to improve the roster this offseason.
