You saw what I saw. The leg went out after he lunged at Breadman. - powerenforcer
Obvious they were trying to take him out.

Here are his contract bonus clauses, in case anyone cares.

Sorry for the long post, but I've been curious about the Hawks' options for 1LW. For all the "Boedker as 1LW solution," the salary cap numbers MATTER, and the math is grim.
I assume the following contracts are signed, or bonuses kick in, or an ELC plays in a spot vacated by a current roster player (unknowns -- not known raises to Seabs and AA):
Boedker - $4.5M for 6 years
Shaw - $2.25M for 4 years (not much of a raise but term)
Kruger - $2M for 5 years (small raise but term)
Panarin - $3.388M (he earns ALL his bonuses for top-10 scoring in the league)
Rasmussen - $.65M for 2 years
Danault - $.9M for 2 years
Dano - $.925 (he plays next year)
Rozsival-type Vet #6/7 Defenseman - $1M
Young ELC #6/7 Defenseman - $.8M
I assume the following trades to clear cap space:
Bickell + 2018 1st-round pick to take his entire salary (cap floor team)
Scuderi + 2018 2nd-round pick to take his entire salary (ditto on type of team)
That's $74.6M in salaries next year, so they better hope that the cap goes up by $3.2M.
And, consider the assumptions I've made about Kruger, Shaw, and Boedker. The Kruger one seems the most reasonable given his play before his injury. Would Shaw take term on a deal for barely any raise? Or at least a Kruger-style deal for one year until the cap goes up again? Would Boedker, if he comes and lights it up, actually take $4.5M if given longer term? No one wants to see the Hawks score less, but if Panarin could keep up his hot pace but fall to #11 in scoring, that would be huge ($1.75M less). Consider the assumptions about Bickell and Scuderi... How likely are those scenarios to pan out?
I think we hope for a Panik Attack to be lightning in a bottle. After that, I would consider a Boedker-type as a rental for picks if repeating is priority #1. I just don't see a long-term deal work out without losing Shaw and Kruger either this year or the year after for sure. Or maybe that's the plan. Repeat, lock in a core on the top 2 lines, and then try to replace the best players on Lines 3 and 4. |

Isn't it only 1 type of bonus that counts against the cap - but which is it - Schedule A or Schedule B? - StLBravesFan
I think they both count against the cap.
Per Hockeyscap.com
"Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5% of the upper limit." |

The only hit I saw (more than once) was his ass hitting the ice. It doesn't look like he has any strength in his legs. He had a pretty telling interview with Goff and Spiegs about a month ago which he kind of revealed some of the demons he's dealt with/is dealing with. His temperament just isn't suited for playing at less than 100% which is where he's been for a while. It sucks to watch this happen to a player so young. - 1mbecker
They just need to bury Bickell in Rockford and see what they have in Panik. 29 has been a millstone on any line on which he's played this year- sad but true. Maybe he gets a cameo in the playoffs before the buyout window opens in the spring. He must be too expensive to get rid of or he'd be long gone already.

One thing I did find is Scuds only makes 2.5 next year and Penns pay 1.1 of it. So for a team looking to get to the cap floor they would pay him 1.4 but get to claim 2.25. you could trade for a few scrubs making under $950K and bury them in the AHL. It could save the team Money and get them more money apllied to cap space. IE might now need a 2nd
bickell is a whole another story. He is the opposite. |

Isnt Marleau going to be traded ? - mrpaulish
Marleau would be a great fit to play with 19-81 (IMO), but the problem with that is he has another year left on his contract with a cap hit of over $6.5M. So even if SJ would retain 50% it would be around $3.3M on the Hawks Cap for next season.

Then he should take it to LTIR and get whatever surgeries/rehab he needs... Do the team a favor at the same time. I feel for the guy but he shouldn't be playing. It looks like the knees are shot. If the vertigo is still there at all though just sit. |

Wow -- Schedule B bonuses include the majority of the money $1.725M for any number of trophies OR TOP 10 SCORING IN THE LEAGUE.
He's tied for 10th now... that's a huge bonus on next year's cap. - DMChi2010
It doesn't have to be on next years cap. If Stan ends up not acquiring a player that eats up a lot of cap - then there might be enough cap space to pay a lot of that at the end of this season.

So with Panik coming in and probably play Sunday:
Do you put him on the 1st line? or on the 4th?
if its the 1st do you put Shaw on the 3rd or 4th?
I think I might try Panik at 1 and move Shaw to the 4th with garbutt and moose. IMO. I just see no reason to break up lines 2 and 3 right now. |

Not too go against the grain...who am I kidding...to totally go against the grain...
I have no problem with the intent to stop Panarin from scoring. Your going to try and score a cheapie hat trick on me at the end of the game? No problem. I'm going to put you on your butt. And if that was someone else and Shaw took him out, everyone would be applauding Shaw for doing the deed.
Now, I DO have a problem if he stuck out his leg and intentionally tried to take out his legs like some people mentioned. I don't remember that from last night but, if it is true, well that's uncalled for. |

Panik is going to be given a sink or swim spot on the 1st line.

That was my issue, too. The initial hit was standard, but it really did look like he stuck his leg out after |

Another woulda coulda shoulda.... As per Friedman the Hawks were one of three teams onto Parayko in 12 but missed.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/h...uck-intimidating-yzerman/
20. Some good stories can be found on the web about St. Louis’s discovery of Colton Parayko. Here’s a few more. The rookie defenceman said he knew of three other teams who had interest — Arizona, Chicago and Toronto. Marshall Davidson was one of the scouts who watched Parayko. He said a coach from Fort McMurray, Alta. got a call from the Blackhawks after the Blues surprised by taking the defender 86th overall in 2012. “They asked him if he tipped us off about Chicago’s interest,” Davidson said. You could almost see his smile over the phone. Scouts live for that. |

Wiz called it on Rychel early. Looks like a bust or at least a reach... If you can't make that roster? - tredbrta
Only three ex NHLers sons interest me: Domi, Matteau, Manson.
No chance Hawks get them |

Guess drafting Schmaltz was getting back at them... - busmaster
Well they got Fabbri who is already playing for them in the NHL so I don't think that turned out badly for them. |

Bowman on the podcast today says the Blackhawks have identified a few free agents, college and pro, they'll try to get signed. Kind of an obvious comment but he says this is the busiest time of year for these types of things and scouting overall and fans would be surprised if they knew how much time he personally spent on this aspect. He elaborated saying a key factor in signing free agents both college and Euro is the player needs to see an opportunity to play ... says they've missed out on a few guys because maybe they didn't see a clear path. Commented on Gustafsson who told the Blackhawks he was very willing to go to Rockford to acclimate, even if it took a whole year. Bowman said that's not usually how it goes when trying to sign these guys.
Also said they are deep in planning for next year already.
As respects college players, ideally the player approaches the Blackhawks (if they already own his rights) and says they want to go pro. But he added they have and will continue to broach the subject with players they think are ready to turn pro. Made it a point to praise Nick Schmaltz and commented this is a player fans will enjoy seeing play for years. For what that's worth.
Said he was very impressed with Finn defenseman Joni Tullola in the recent tournament, says he really opened their eyes with his all around play and size. Said Tullola missed a lot of time during his draft year which is why he was available late in the draft (6th round) and they are projecting him to contribute, i.e. not just as a depth defenseman. Commented Tullola needs to add some bulk to his frame. |

never listened to his podcast...very interersting...thanks for posting
his point about the amount of time spent on scouting and recruiting UFA's, college and international makes alot of sense to me...have to be extremely focused and proactive in that area. Drafting and developing is not enough in today's cap world...
