If Hextall can trade Grossmann with a year left at $3.5m, why can't he trade Schultz with a year left at $2.25m?
I thought the Rinaldo extension was insane at the time, but he turned it into a 3rd. - Feanor
At this point I think we can be absolutely positive that Hextall can trade anyone |

They ate money on Grossmann to move him -- not sure that is an option anybody would find appealing with Schultz - AllInForFlyers
They ate $500,000 so Arizona would take Pronger, too.
Why would we care if Hextall retained salary on Schultz for one year and got a pick back? His replacement in the lineup would be a player on an ELC. |

The only reason they ate money on that deal was to cover the cost of Pronger's salary. - MJL
Don't forget they had to take Gagner back, too -- you're not seriously trying to spin that Arizona wanted Grossmann free and clear? |

Except Andrew MacDonald.
Not even Millbury would trade for him. |

I am all for arguing with him, but he is right...the 500k covered the salary due to Pronger |

At 2.25 he'd be easier to move. A contender would probably figure that they could unload him in the offseason, especially if they were willing to retain 750k or so. A rebuilding team might have interest in a guy like Schultz for 1 year at 1.5 million. - BiggE
Flyers can't retain anymore money this year. They used their two on Schenn and Vinny. |

Im not trying to spin anything. Gagner is on an expiring contract.
Here's what you're trying to spin, that the Flyers made a bad signing by extending Schultz 2 years, and claiming that it might be difficult to trade him. The Flyers just traded Lecavalier for heaven's sake! |

Arizona wanted Pronger for the cap floor -- are you guys even being serious right now?
You guys do realize that with Pronger in LTIR, the Coyotes aren't paying Pronger's salary. They don't need $500K to cover him. That's paid by insurance. The reason you take Pronger is because you DON'T have to pay him.
Are you guys just (frank)ing with me this morning? |

It was a direct quote from the Arizona GM. You're flailing around in ignorance right now.

That's not spin. Arizona's management said before the season they liked Grossmann and he has played in their top four all season.
Is this the week you really want to go out on a limb saying Hextall couldn't trade Schultz if he wanted to? |

I am all for retaining salary on just about anybody we move next season. They are cleared out of the imminent cap trouble with the Vinny move and retaining salary will maximize the return |

You don't know for a fact that it is covered by insurance. Talking about spin. That money was to pay for Pronger. Everyone realizes the value of the cap hit versus the salary was the value to Arizona. Lastly, you're wrong, Pronger is not on LTIR with the Coyotes. |

"Grossman will play behind OEL on the left side... plays against other team's top players... Dahlbeck is a good defender... young Murphy is going to take a step forward this year... last year we struggled at center ice. We have some young players that can go in there... the guy that's going to be interesting to watch is Richardson, who we have slotted as a third line center... right now I'm thinking about a line of him and Doan and Reider on the third line... we have way more balance than last year." - Tippett
"This Pronger thing... that whole thing was an accounting issue. They were willing to eat a half million in Grossman's salary if we took (Pronger) on... it meant nothing to us. That whole idea that we were acquiring Pronger to keep spend below the cap... absolutely not... we're going to be well above the floor" - Maloney
Arizona are currently $7.7m above the cap floor.

So you are saying that the Coyotes had no interest in Pronger because of real dollars vs accounting dollars, because Maloney didn't come out and say, "yeah, with our attendance and revenues, we need help in balancing our sheet. Come on out and watch, though!"

Maybe they will trade Schultz for another one year reclamation project forward with a similar cap hit like Gagner.
The thing we know for sure is that Hextall is an expert on getting good returns for defensemen:
Coburn = 1st + 3rd + Gudas
Kimmo = Two 2nds
Grossmann ($500K retained) + Pronger = Gagner + 3rd
LSchenn + Vinny = 3rd + Weal |

IR is not the same thing as LTIR. The key is the two extra letters. |
