Nobody really believes/thinks Byfuglien/Flyers will happen. It doesn't matter. It's what the guy does for a living. Made a bunch of us talk about it. |

What should be put into question is how good this current squad really is. Are we buyers or sellers at the deadline if the playoffs are a possibility. |

Even if they are a possibility, the Flyers shouldn't be buyers. Especially for a guy like Byfuglien, who will cost an arm and a leg. Buy if you're a contender & need an extra piece to get over the top. Buy if you're a solid playoff team and the right deal could spur a run.
Don't buy if you're going to squeak in and the cost to get a guy who will make an impact is going to seriously dent the prospect pool they've spent 3 years building.
Being a buyer because you're a low playoff qualifier leads to poop like Andrew MacDonald |

Agreed. As much as I'd love to see the Flyers make the playoffs, it is not worth spending future assets to just squeeze in.In all likelihood, if they make it, they are eliminated early. I know anything can happen if you get in, but I'm sure we all agree this is not a contending team.
Wait until the team is a legitimate threat and then look to add at the deadline to bolster a run.

Hextall's first priority is the future. Their position in the standings may limit selling, but I doubt they'll be buyers.

not to mention joey porter on the field during a stoppage talking poop, goading pacman into a penalty. porter should have been flagged - Crimsoninja
How about Burfict straight up punching a dude on the ground and no call? How about the Steelers coach getting 15 for not getting plowed into? How about taking a TD away from the Steelers by not calling a clear fumble as a fumble? |

Exactly. If you can make a deal that doesn't hurt the future-like getting a pending UFA for a 5th rounder, fine.
But they're really not in a position at the present time to deal premium picks or prospects for deadline additions, especially not 0ver 30 pending UFA defensemen that will cost a load of cash and term to re-sign.
Now a deal of a youngster for youngster, like the Johanson for Jones swap is possibly worth exploring, if it fills a need and provides a long term solution. |

Considering the going rate for even dreck like Defenseman-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, Kubina, Rinaldo...who are we getting for a 5th? A middle aged Cambodian fisherman? |

Alright, now what about the sellers portion of the question? Regardless of our position of the standings, would you still continue shed a deal like Mark Streit's by the deadline this year or wait things out? Streit is still an asset both ways. |

I'd sell a guy under contract for next season if it brought a very good return. If Somebody offered a Coburn value deal for Streit, I'd probably take it. Otherwise, I'd hang onto him.
Now, for pending UFAs, if it's a guy I'd prefer keeping I'd try to get a deal done. But if it wasn't close on terms or cash, then sell them for the best price you can get. |

Jesus, I was JUST listening to Bowie's new album earlier tonight. My favorite artist, no question
I thought he looked a little gaunt, even by his standards, in his new music videos -- now I know why. Final album no doubt released coinciding with his final days. Even the lyrics and tone of the album (hell even the videos) make so much sense in a different way now. It's a self eulogy. (frank). It's almost hard to listen to (or watch) now. |

I'm not saying give Streit away but the Coburn trade was very good. 1st, 3rd and Gudas (I know he was kinda a salary dump). I would be happy with just a late round 1st or a good LW prospect with size. Ideally I would trade Streit + a B prospect (Hagg or Cousins or Straka or Read or ?) and a lower draft pick for a Rychel or Crouse or Ritchie like player. My point is, if the return is enough then it is enough to do right now. He isn't the future and all eyes need to be on 2-4 years from now. |

Certainly, if the return is good enough, make the deal.
My gut feeling is that they will listen, but aren't going to really shop Streit, unless they're really out of the playoff picture.
The other thing is, Streit as a pending UFA might have more value than an over 35 Streit with another year left at $5.25mm |

I agree.
The deal has to be right. Getting another first rounder would be nice. I think eyes have to be on 17-18 for when we will start to see the benefits of Hextall.
