What do we do if the expansion draft doesn't happen this summer, but next summer? Some of the guys we have on the exempt list might no longer be. Foligno, Girgensons, Risto, McCabe will all be on their new deals (if we keep Foligno). So that opens up more spots.

If the expansion draft was Next summer instead of this summer,

Using the 7-3-2 we'd have:

Exempt: Eichel, Reinhart

Protected Forwards: O'Reilly, Kane, Girgensons, and if they're still here McGinn, Schaller, Larsson and Ennis.
Protected Defensemen: Ristolainen, McCabe, Bogosian
Protected Goalies: Lehner and Ullmark

Using the 9-5-1 we'd have:

Protected Forwards: O'Reilly, Kane, Girgensons, and if they're still here McGinn, Schaller, Larsson and Ennis. Would have 2 more slots for Deslauries and someone else.
Protected Defensemen: Ristolainen, McCabe, Bogosian, Pysyk, and either Gorges or Franson.
Protected Goalies: Lehner or Ullmark, whichever you like more.

I personally go with the 2nd method and risk losing Ullmark. Would rather lose him than lose Pysyk.

Edit: Ullmark would actually be exempt as well. Sabres would need to use offer up Lehner or sign another goalie and offer him up instead.

D: Bogosian, Pysyk, Ristolainan, McCabe, Franson
G: Lehner (Ullmark is exempt)

17/18 pre-season:

F: O'Reilly, Kane, Ennis, Girgensons + 1 other (FA signing/traded player)
D: Ristolainan, Pysyk, McCabe
G: Lehner, Ullmark

Reinhart and Eichel are exempt from both scenarios as their ELCs are still valid for the seasons noted. If the draft takes place before the 18/19 season, then it's tougher with those 2, but at that point you likely don't have to worry about 2 goalies either.
