These people who are saying Kopitar is not deserving of this contract really don't know how Kopitar plays. - KINGS67
Exactly! You can send him over to the Ducks at 10 and we'd give you back Getz. And not one Kings fan would want that. Personally I was hoping he'd sign for more so he'd cause more cap havoc. But Kopi is worth 10. Plus, he's a total class act. Man do I wish he was a Duck. |

Whats really said is the Pens traded for Kessel cap hit and the Leafs are retaining some of it....I say the Kings will be ok... |

The thing that many people--including Mike Augello--seem to overlook in presuming that the Leafs are somehow "entitled" to Steven Stamkos because of their cap-space and their ownership group's wealth is that there is no State Income Tax in Florida. To clarify what this means, let's use Kopitar as an example: There is a 13.3% State Income Tax in California for anyone making 1 million dollars or more. That means that Kopitar's 10 million dollars per year translates exactly to 8.67 million dollars per year in Florida--something that the Lightning would likely find a way to manage, even if it meant trading Val Filppula and somehow moving-out another weighty contract.
Using Kevin Allen's ironic "guesstimate" that the Lightning would somehow sign Stamkos to an eight-year extension at 9.1 million per year as a point of reference, that would mean that the Maple Leafs would have to sign Stamkos to a deal worth 10,297,560 dollars per year to even match--not beat--the salary that Kevin Allen guesses would be fair. (That amount is calculated based upon the 13.16% Provincial Income Tax that citizens of Ontario pay on any salary over $200,000 per year.) Since Steven Stamkos has said on more than one occasion that he loves playing in Tampa Bay and hopes to spend his career here (see Fox Sports Florida's 2015-2016 Lightning Season Preview), it is unlikely that he will go all mercenary for a million or two per year from Toronto...I really doubt that.
If he is indeed moved before the trade deadline, it will more likely come as a result of cap compression and the need to sign the Triplets and Victor Hedman to extensions, not because "life is all about money" and everyone should go for the biggest pay day possible--that doesn't sound much like Steven Stamkos to me. |

toews 10.5 (2014)
kopitar 10 (2016)
malkin 9.5 (2013)
getzlaf 8.3 (2013)
giroux 8.3 (2013)
bergeron 6.9 (2013)
the only one that stands out as better value is bergeron
the rest seem close enough.
i'm starting to re-think where stamkos fits in after looking at it this way. somewhere between malkin and kopitar seems right. - Tumbleweed
Its funny when you look at when those guys signed those deals, at the time in 2013-14, with the TV deal freshly in place, all signs were pointing towards the cap always going up....now its a different story, so those deals at the time were justified.
Today Kopitar is justified to be paid similar cash as those guys, but the financial landscape of the NHL has changed, so it seems like way too much money for a player now.
Basically lockouts are coming again, things are too wonky with. 3 Years and its all messed |

What signs on DET & Stamkos? It's only hearsay & speculation so why be so vague unless it's total BS? |

it'll be an interesting couple of years. i don't know how the cap rises next year in face of 2 years of the declining canadian dollar.
Three years from now, the canadian dollar may be on the upswing again and magically hockey revenues will start growing. if not, i agree, there are going to be a lot of upset people in the nhl... |

EVERYONE brings this-up. The lack of taxes man squat if they're not going to give him 10+ per year for 8 years. The savings are if they give what other teams are willing to do. The fact it's mid January makes me think they are not offering him enough.

You are correct in this statement. Again, the people who are bashing this contract don't know how he plays which is a shame.
Here's a fun fact:
Most Points Among Players From 2005 NHL Draft
Sidney Crosby 886
Anze Kopitar 645
Paul Stastny 522
Bobby Ryan 427 |

There are ways to keep Lucic
Don't sign Lewis trade Brown(or get rid of the contract in the expansion draft), Nolan, and or Clifford
Buyout Greene (1.667 in savings) while the cap goes up a little maybe 1.3MM this next year. |

Pickard is pretty good, he will be a very good back up. I dont think they trade him, they will move Berra or waiver him to make room for Picks.
Not sure what he resigns for, I assume around the 1.1m mark
Edit: Nevermind, we have a new back up now
