He has to agree to a trade. It's in Stamkos' court not Yzerman's. - RogerRoeper I agree with that. I just don't think Stamkos would want to win a cup for a team he'll be leaving months from now
but certainly Stamkos is in control |

And in the end, only Stamkos knows what Stamkos wants at this point.
But it should be fun, regardless.

I agree. Except for not signing lewis. Most underrated player IMO. He's a swiss army knife. Get rid of Nolan, or Clifford. The bottom 6 needs work anyways, clean house.
I feel bad for Greene. He has all but been forgotten about. Even Jim Fox had to apologize for not bringing him up. - Deadmau55
I agree about Lewis but Lucicneeds to be resigned. If LA manages to keep Lewis and let go other players I'm all for it.
I feel bad for Greene too but again if signing a good player like Lucic means saying good bye to others I'm all for it. |

Man, all the players we won the cup with are almost all gone
I guess as long as we have Kopi, DD, and Quick we will be ok.
Not many teams can say they have the best forward, defenseman, and goalie in the league. |

The thing that many people--including Mike Augello--seem to overlook in presuming that the Leafs are somehow "entitled" to Steven Stamkos because of their cap-space and their ownership group's wealth is that there is no State Income Tax in Florida. To clarify what this means, let's use Kopitar as an example: There is a 13.3% State Income Tax in California for anyone making 1 million dollars or more. That means that Kopitar's 10 million dollars per year translates exactly to 8.67 million dollars per year in Florida--something that the Lightning would likely find a way to manage, even if it meant trading Val Filppula and somehow moving-out another weighty contract.
Using Kevin Allen's ironic "guesstimate" that the Lightning would somehow sign Stamkos to an eight-year extension at 9.1 million per year as a point of reference, that would mean that the Maple Leafs would have to sign Stamkos to a deal worth 10,297,560 dollars per year to even match--not beat--the salary that Kevin Allen guesses would be fair. (That amount is calculated based upon the 13.16% Provincial Income Tax that citizens of Ontario pay on any salary over $200,000 per year.) Since Steven Stamkos has said on more than one occasion that he loves playing in Tampa Bay and hopes to spend his career here (see Fox Sports Florida's 2015-2016 Lightning Season Preview), it is unlikely that he will go all mercenary for a million or two per year from Toronto...I really doubt that.
If he is indeed moved before the trade deadline, it will more likely come as a result of cap compression and the need to sign the Triplets and Victor Hedman to extensions, not because "life is all about money" and everyone should go for the biggest pay day possible--that doesn't sound much like Steven Stamkos to me. - TommyRitas
Sure, but if Stamkos were to sign in Toronto, he'll make a zillion dollars from endorsements.

Why would any NHL GM pay anything substantial for Stamkos when it's so obvious he will be signing with his favorite NHL team next season?

I get that Drouin went very high in his draft year, that his junior numbers were very good, however he has shown NOTHING at the NHL level, he has played with some pretty good players, hardly stuck on a bottom feeder with no talent to assist him in showing his skills. He has done nothing, yet people here are willing to toss proven players or high quality prospects out at the chance. If this guy can't get going with Stamkos and others from a Stanley cup contender, what makes you think he will get going with your club. Note to Snow, NO, I'll stick with our prospects thanks. |

its not entitlement at all, its more his preference more than anything, not saying for sure he wants in toronto or not, just saying he wont get any more recognition in hockey than his hometown...the city would bring in multitudes of profits for the entire NHL. |

If I'm Stamkos I sign with Toronto in the offseason at a discount, say $9M per year. Two reasons:
1. The value of his non hockey related income would be more than enough to offset the taxes. Also, players are paid in $USD which means he would be doing very well on exchange the next several years. Money will never be a concern for the guy.
2. Legacy. He can play out his career in Tampa and maybe win a cup or two, but even if he continues to put up close to a point per game his career there he will still not be remembered on the level that guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, Toews, Doughty, Datsyuk will be, just because he is down there in Tampa.
If he goes to Toronto he would more than likely assume the Captain role immediately and get a chance to play for the best coach in the league. Toronto will have a legit change to win the cup in the next 2-4 years and if they do, he will be a legend in Toronto. |
