We need to be picking multiple D in the first 3 rounds every year. I think it is hard to pic D in the top 10 and as much as I like Shink, Gaunce, McCann, Jensen (at the time), that's when you can still find really good D.
- belcherbd

So we draft 7 d..where are they going to play? Only so many roster spaces, can only carry something like 45 contracts . Where they gonna play? Already 7 in Vancouver probably 5 under contract in Utica. 1-2 in junior. Draft 7 you have used up close to 20 rosters spots on defence. Still need bare minimum 24 forwards and 4 goalies. Where's everyone gonna play???

Nurse, Jones, Gunbrandson, Brodin, Alzner, Johnson, Ekblad, Petro, Bogosian... seems like the top ten has been a good idea to me, I'm sure I could find more but that's off the top of my head.

Let's stop pretending that every prospect turns out. A really good organization would be lucky to have 25% of it's players become NHL regulars. The Canucks are batting about 10% for their existence.

You let the ones that aren't working out walk and fill with younger potential. Thats what a good team does, not hold on to players that can't make the show by 23-25.

We haven't had a player go from the draft into the lineup that I can rememeber in the last ten years. All the kids in our lineup were drafted two years ago... pretty sure you don't draft to fill roster spots with those picks, rather to develop them into future players... particularly with d

I do think that both Dorsett and Prust are plugs however and hopefully they are gone soon.

So you want no one on this team that provides toughness and fights?
JB felt we needed these guys, I trust him. Remember this is just regular season... they guys will matter big in the Playoffs

This is a problem I see in the fan base (Im not directing this at you)....they beg and beg for toughness ...they scream how the team is weak blah blah blah. We get a couple guys and everyone wants them gone. It a stupid retarded cycle of b i tching in the vancouver fan base.
Complain you dont have something and then once you get it complain about him the whole time. So lets say we get rid of them....the B i tching will be that we let them go for nothing or didnt get enough return or how dare we trade our toughness.

the complaining just NEVER ENDS no matter what happens.

Im really starting to wonder if this forum is filled with a bunch of cranky old women in menopause that havent had any sausage in years

The way I see it there are at least 3 NHL roster spots up for grabs next year, which means a few in Utica and more in the ECHL. We aren't realistically going to draft 7D, but lets say 3/yr for 3 years is 9 spots. Over 3 years, that really isn't that much.

I think Alzner and Carlson as first round picks is a bigger factor. Although Niskanen has delivered more than I expected

Canucks have drafted 3 D in the first 2 rounds in the past 11 drafts and only 7 if you include the 3rd round in the past 13 drafts.

Caps drafted 10 D in the first 2 rounds in the past 11 drafts for comparison.

If our last management payed attention to drafting it would not be an issue now

hahaha Prust and Dorsett... how many fights this year? How many times have you seen then sticking up for guys? How about sending messages? Sorry man, I'd like to see toughness from these two or anybody. Prust is invisible game after game, Dorsett a forechecker that stirs the pot at best.

Or trade each one for two at a lesser price.

'I agree....we have forward depth right now but little on D. Restock those cupboards.

I really dont know who is available on D in draft...we may have no choice in the position we chose

Chychrun is #3 in both of the latest NHL.com mockdrafts. Surprised more aren't on board to be honest. I would be pretty happy with laine or Puljaarvi, but am hoping for D in both of the first two rounds.

I get nervous about picking D with top 5 picks.
Seems to rarely work out (Bryan Allen, not that he was terrible, but...you know, below expectations).

Exactly. The best chance they become pro is if you take them in the first/second round, which is why if you need x position you pick it in those rounds

That seems to be the average age defenseman come into the league...yes you walk away on players that don't show enough. But this is a team game you just can't waste an entire draft on one position. Balance is key

Again this is regular season....you get those guys for playoffs mainly. They can float all year then be there when it matters. Sometimes the plan isnt obvious in regular season

Quinn used to do this years ago when he was GM. Worked well in 94. Tim Hunter was king kong in the playoffs, but was an old grandma regular season...quinn new this

Lets have some faith in JB, he knows what he is doing

Fair enough. Our track record isn't the greatest, but Ohlund was a first rounder and we haven't picked many outside of those two and Bourdon. Jovo was a top ten I'm pretty sure.

The point of a bridge is that the player is a RFA, Sbisa was set to hit UFA status for his first time cause (believe it or not) he's played in the NHl since he was 18.
- neem55

Nope Sbisa was an RFA, that's why Benning needed to offer him 2.8 as a min I believe.

Nope three is a good number considering our needs. 7....of any position. Bad idea
