This makes good sense ! I'd take it one further and just shut hank down. He is obviously hurting , not much help to the team if he really hurts himself long term.

He's also going to want minimum 7x7, no thanks, I'd rather suffer with what we have and draft trade for young D that we can develop into a Buff.

let NYR trade Yandle somewhere else . Trade Hamhiuis for a second and and draft a D prospect.

Cap space is paramount.Hamhuis plus Vrbata is 9.5 mil in space to find a replacement for winger and a D. Replace Vrbata with Shink JV JM Gaunce , But the likely candidate is Hansen.

Take that 7 mil and offer sheet a RFA Dman. Yes it is an overpayment of one player but you have your top guy. We can't trade for him seeing we don't have the horses in the barn. It will cost us a first second and third. . We would have needed to included a first anyways. We have Columbus second which would be very high.
I would rather pay a young guy likeTrouba Dumba or Reilly that money instead of Buff or Yandle. Yes it is an overpayment but you have a very good Dman for 7 years locked in.

An asset would be draft picks or a player with term still on a deal. Yandle would not be an asset....ufa = no club control, walks for nothing. Sorry I'd rather move hammer for picks and try an resign him super cheap.
