Canucks should try get a couple of 2nd or 3rd rounders for those guys. Gotta figure someone would give up a 2nd rounder for Vrbata. - iknowbest
The most recent rumblings from Friedman ( I believe) was that mgmt hasn't decided if they want to resign or sell them yet.

Can't believe Eklund wasn't breaking this story....as tied into the pulse of the league as he is. Not even an E-3 Ek? Come on man quit mailing it in ! |

I'll bet he is clearing roster space for Drouin |

Resignin will leave a lot of empty seats. I can't ever begin to say how pissed I would be. |

Id still trade them even if you do wana resign them. Hamhuis you would think would go to a contender then come back again in the offseason. ALthough i dont think hes worth coming back unless you think you have a legit shot at the palyoffs and can get him cheap and with a short term |

Exactly how I feel. You cant tell me Vrbata is all that much better than Gaunce or Shink. Horvat and Sven are carrying that line. |

I think Benning wants to do things the way most here want them to be done. Play the young guys, deal Vets on expring deals or those who wont fit in long term. The problem is aquilini the guy is brain dead if he thinks this is a playoff team, wouldnt be surprised if he directs JB to add at the deadline. The quicker this team acquires draft picks and unloads money the quicker you can add and develop high end talent and sign UFAs that will fit your long term plans. |

It isn't just about Vrbata being better than those players, it is chemistry and role within the lineup.
The knocks against him is he doesn't play with the Sedins even strength and if Bo is going to be 2nd line centre, it sounds like the offense from that line is coming from Sven and Bo with Vrbata being replaceable. He provides no physical game.
The big positive for Vrbata is he is a sniper, likes to shoot. a threat on the pp. Just too bad he isn't producing results.
JB has to do his business or get off the pot. Either extend Vrbata now or trade him. I think JB wants Lucic or another pending ufa and is stalling. The team needs to move on from Vrbata, but are afraid to lose the skill. |

Benning said a few weeks back the Canucks should have about 15 mil in space to shop this summer, that means moving Vrbata Hamhuis |

Exactly.
Like it or not, Vrbata is the only player on this roster outside of the Sedin's who have been able to score consistently the last few seasons. He is still 2nd on this team for goals. They have decided to move on from Higgins, which I think all can agree is the right move but he has also been a consistent scorer for this team other than obviously this year.
Hansen has shown more finish this year but outside of that, there are a lot of question marks for him and the kids. I can understand why mgmt would be hesitant to move one of their few proven goal scorers. They are not willing to tank which a applaud them for and they will need to find someone to replace Vrbata's consistency in the top 6.
Personally I think there are lots of options in the FA market that would be able to replace him for a similar cost, and as long as Benning doesn't go into FA period with a 1 track mind ( Lucic) he should be able to find a replacement, while acquiring an asset for Vrbata.

That is his challenge. And that same sort of challenge or fear of not being able to find a replacement is likely why we have Sbisa. hoping the top 6 winger slot is easier to fill than finding a dman...
we have seen JB over pay in a trade for the player he wants, I hope he can get a reasonable contract out of the ufa's he targets. The Vrbata contract was reasonable, JB should be able to repeat.
good post. |

I think that is optimistic thinking that it will be 15 to spend.
I count 18.78 million to replace or resign
Vrbata, Hamhuis, Prust, Vey, Baertschi, Etem, Cracknell, Bartkowski, Weber, Beiga.
or less than 2 million per player.
Buying out or trading Higgins would bring a bit more in and obviously some of those players will be resigned or replaced for under 1.9 each but expecting this team to be able to spend on big UFA acquisitions is going to lead to disappointment. |
