I can't even fathom how Dave Jackson doesn't rule it the way you just described. The rule CLEARLY allows for that.
I hate that penalty call as much as anything I have seen in years. That is is how little discretion I feel Dave Jackson exercised on that play. That penalty pisses me off as much as any call I have ever seen. Not the disallowed goal. The penalty still has me pissed, 12 hours later - AllInForFlyers
There seems to be a difference between how the rule is written, and how it is called. We've all seen numerous times where contact with the goaltender has been accidental, and yet a penalty is called. I think that's how the league gets itself in trouble with those contradictions. I also think there is an issue with a rule when 5 different people can read it and come up with 5 different interpretations.

I'm not pissed for two reasons-1 they got the win. 2. Dave Jackson has been a bad ref for years and stuff like this is commonplace for him. If I get mad and stay mad, I have to get pissed over again for the past bad calls. |

Interesting definition of incidental there, Webster. - Giroux_Is_God
You can look up the word in the dictionary, have at it. That's how it is considered in the NHL, and how the refs look at it. Rather than make the comment you make here, join the conversation and offer a worthwhile comment.

I know. He does reveal some insightful things from time to time, but it's hard to appreciate it when he's acting like an ass.
Last night's broadcast just felt so much more like what a broadcast should sound like. It wasn't over the top ridiculous like the others are. I don't hate Eddie and Doc, but the combination of them and Pierre just doesn't work. - PhillySportsGuy
Miller is a lead PxP guy for TSN, which is why he's not often doing games on NBC. But he usually calls a great game. Ferraro is probably one of the best color analysts, because he's sharp and doesn't often engage in the hyprbole or nonsense others do.

3 rows from the ice. Right of the wings penalty box from the second period on. Oh and Bellemare smacked the glass while I was hitting on a girl and gave me a practice puck during warm ups.

I was a always a fan of Strader and co. I'd imagine I'm not alone there.
The guys last night called a great game. I'll echo the sentiments throughout |

Yeah I thought when they adopted the challenge that it would be just like the NFL where the ref gives a brief reasoning behind the call. - Streit2ThePoint
They even have time to talk with the league HQ before giving an explanation |

So not worth it. 2 points in the bag, on to the next game and perhaps the debut of Weal. |

Yeah I love Strader. Even when they saddle him with Engblom. I don't mind Engblom, but he's not really a guy that brings a ton on his own. |

NBC really needs to blow things up. I feel like they've gone the ESPN/Skip Bayless route with their NHL coverage. |

Fell asleep but good to read the captain was able to put the team in his back and get a critical goal. I'm starting to feel better about the direction they're headed, hopefully they can maintain it. |

Just going to throw this out there (and no I am not scapegoating a single player)...
VDV might be the greatest NHL player ever at winning a battle, keeping a puck in the offensive zone, stealing a puck in the offensive zone, or just getting a puck in the offensive zone in general, and then immediately turning it over. I dont think I have seen any player do it better or more frequently. |

Really gets me. Whts more is some refs do and some don't. Again- continuity like I said in my other, presumably non-worthwhile post.
What's the big deal? They can't give a 15 second explanation? The refs go over to the coaches and explain but they can't explain it to everyone watching? Kind of a poopty way to operate. |

As much as we all pick on Pierre, I really dont mind him. They guy is a weasel, but thats his character. He does know a ton, is pretty funny at times, and generally does a good job at remaining unbiased. Plus, I like being able to mock him during the games. |

This was a very fun game to watch. Detroit, from what I've seen, may be the fastest team in the league and their puck control is absolutely amazing. They are so calm with the puck and they always seem to know where to go with it (sans turnstile Green). Also, their puck retrieval was incredible. Very impressed that the Flyers got the W.
As for the Ghost no-goal, I agreed that the goal shouldn't have counted, but from the way I understand the rule, there should not have been a penalty. Simmonds was not in the crease and did not deliberately make an attempt to contact the goalie. Whatever, it all worked out.
Also, I have no problem with Ryan White in general as a 4C, but I don't think the Flyers will be missing much if he sits for a few. I'm just glad the Flyers killed off the 5 minutes and were able to win despite playing 57 minutes with only 11 forwards. |

You are correct: I absolutely have seen accidental contact get called for a penalty. I have, so you are correct.
However, I have NEVER seen it when the player never entered the crease, or wasn't in the crease. When I have seen it called, it was always something I could fathom, even when I didn't agree, because the player interaction with the goalie was either in the crease or while he was passing through it.
That's the part that infuriates me: Simmonds never was in the crease. I understand you can still be penalized outside of the crease if it's intentional contact, but what we saw last night...wow. Deep breath. Because it is over, the Flyers won. But (frank) me, that's a bad (frank)ing call on the penalty, and I am just glad it didn't prove costly |
