Don't disagree.

But to state that there are no decent players coming from drafts the last few years is also unrealistic. Very few players make it to the NHL in the first 2 years, and if you are with certain teams (ie: Red Wings, for example), you can usually expect longer development cycles.

Not comparing the Habs to the Wings, just saying just because a player gets drafted does not mean he should be in the NHL in 6 months, and certainly, without development time.

Everyone poop all over the Habs when they rushed guys to the NHL. Now they are keeping guys in the CHL, AHL, or Europe longer and now that means all picks are suddenly poop.

Unbelievable.

problem is of all those guys that are working there way through you can't see ONE of them as eventually being more than a complementary player. Not a lot of impact guys in there.

So, when Bergevin was hired, he thought to himself that he would rebuild this team through the draft, Blackhawks style. A guy named Carey Price screwed his plan and he had to act like a contender right away. Didn't get the chance to acquire high end talent through the draft after he got Galchenyuk.

How do you get out of that? It's not going to be an easy task, and as long as Price will put up the numbers, you'll have the same old same old, a team that's going around in circles, great regular season, gets knocked out of the playoffs in the second round and gets an horrible position to draft in the first round.

- stinger67

Yep. Habs will be an average team for 6 or 7 more years and then they will realize that price is 35 years old and it's time to start all over again.

Became a PPG player in my game of EastSide Hockey Manager!

Traded him for some plug and a 5th. The Bergevin way.

i don't believe that for a second. there was a competitive core in place: an all-star goalie in Price, with guys like Subban, Markov, Plekanec, Pacioretty, Cole, DD... they endured a poop storm that second half under Cunneyworth that came after many consecutive years of making the playoffs. there was absolutely no reason to believe that the team he was taking over was going to be competing for top 5 draft slots as it was constructed.

That's bad, but let's look at Montreal's 1st round picks since hiring Trevor Timmins:

Chris Higgins
Andrei Kostitsyn
Kyle Chipchura
Carey Price
David Fisher
Mcdonagh/Pacioretty
Danny Kristo
Louis Leblanc
Jarred Tinordi
Nathan Beaulieu
Alex Galchenyuk
Michael McCarron
Nikita Scherbak
Noah Juulsen

3 good first rounds out of 14 is the reason we stink.

Is that a matter of the players picked or a factor of where you are picking? Not saying good drafting is impossible, but also filled with some luck.

29 teams passed on Benn and (to a lesser extent) Pavelski, etc...

I think guys like Sherback, McCarron and Hudon have the chance of being solid 2nd line players. Too soon to tell.

The odds of winning a cup even with a good team aren't great, doing it with a goalie winning 4 rounds on his own is very unlikely. Possible, but there's a very good chance you go 0 for 7 in that scenario

You could go one step further and look back 14 years and see how many players that the have drafted in total have had an impact in the nhl. The teams track record for drafting has been brutal

yes that's fine but then you need to find another way to fill the holes in your lineup.

you can't make up for passing on Benn and Pavelski by picking up Byron.
