No, I don't think there's a point to any kind of rental this year. If they can get him and sign him prior to free agency though that would be nice.

Regardless of where teams are in the standings come trade deadline day, it's always a bad idea to give up 1st round picks for rentals

buying guys at deadline day allows you to dress a roster that would not be cap compliant at the beginning of the year.
hurts to mortgage the future, but sometimes you have to go all in to gain an edge on the competition. that said, giving up 1sts is something only the top 5 or so teams should be doing imo.
just as importantly - you need to plan to recoup young assets once in a while if you selling off your 1sts. kinda like what chicago has been doing by trading saad/leddy/bolland etc.. They've be able to acquire picks/prospects to replenish the system. |
