Great article Carol, as usual. Hamhuis contract does seem like one of Gillis' better moves given how good he's been as a Canuck, if he brings back some value at TDL then it really looks good. Stoked to have Sutter back, he and Bo could take us out of the basement in faceoffs. |

Good to have Sutter back.
Im still not too sure of Vey's position with the club but I do like him and Etem playing together. |

I wouldn't mind if Hamhuis pulled a Daniel Winnik and got traded at the deadline and then resigned with us come July 1st. We have next to nothing coming up the pipeline in terms of young defenseman..... if he was willing to sign for 2 years that could buy us some time to get some young guys in the system and developing in the AHL etc.

I wouldn't be against seeing Hamhuis back for a couple years but not at the expense of another dman's development. Trading and resigning sounds like a win win if a younger and better ufa dman isn't available.
Is this what we are looking at next season?
Edler Tanev
Hutton Sbisa
Biega
Pedan, Fedun, Sautner
Tryamkin?
Don't want both Weber and Bartkowski back, maybe Bart...
We are going to have injuries and need some depth. |

I've liked what i've seen so far, but they need to produce at some point.
As an RFA next year, what would you do with Etem? |

Not a huge fan of Chychrun to be honest. I don't see much creativity in his game. All the points he gets seems to be clappers from the point. His point production isn't exactly eye popping either.... i would expect more from a top 10 pick. |

If we get lucky and draft Chychrun and sign say Alex Goligoski and Stammer do we go from basement to potential inference semi finalists with the addition of a vet de? |

I agree.
Although i don't think we'll make the playoff's this year and would not be opposed to Hammer being traded for a decent haul, I see him having value for our blueline.
I am one of the ones that annoy Vantel by being on the Hammer bandwagon.
IMO, he's 33, not 39.
He still has legs and plays sound positional hockey and brings a lot of veteran leadership to this team. |

If we lose Weber, Hammer and ? Bart, then i would fully expect JB to either trade/sign another top 4 Dman.
I don't think it's realistic to expect Hutton, Biega to play top 4. |

Got to look past the end of the nose. You have a youth movement that is progressing to the next level. You have about 20 mil in cap space and a clean slate of older players except Miller and the twins , and you want to bring back an older slower often injured player
Open up the imagination, we don't have to hang onto memories |

I think everyone is on the youth movement bus, but you need vets as well.
Dmen usually progress at different speed and are harder to protect/shelter than forwards.
We have Hutton this year, and Tanev before him.
I have no issue with bringing in a young player on the backend every year or two, but not just for the sake of doing so.
It's not like we have a lot of young quality D prospects banging on the door. |

You have Tanev and Edler as your Vets and the twins in the locker room. Because Hamhuis has been out for a while most here forget about his foot speed and beaten to the outside before the injury.
Biega is doing just as good as he did at 3.5 cheaper. |

Horcoff playing the 'i didn't know the drugs were bad drugs' card.

Your D next year is Tanev Edler Hutton Sbisa Pedan and Biega.
Go after Gryba for bottom pair toughness and one more guy.
No need to commit 4.5 for another three to four years of Hamhuis |

Tanev is not a vet.
He does not have the experience of Hamhuis.
I agree Hamhuis looked slow at times earlier in the year.
I'm just not convinced that it is a chronic issue (like Burrows).
I think it's great that Biega has earned his spot on the team, but over the long term and if we were to make the playoffs, I don't think he'd be an adequate replacement.
As mentioned earlier, I think he is a good 5-6 at this point. Hamhuis is a real good 3-4. |

I have an open mind to change. I'd have preferred Pedan in the lineup over Sbisa but it didn't unfold that way. I'd like to see Pedan in the lineup next season. But, I don't think WD likes big players.
There was a story earlier in the season about Hutton being nervous on the bench, leg tapping and how Hamhuis was a calming influence.
It is still an option, there will be other options in the off season.
If we can get a better, younger ufa dman who can play in the top 4, or make a trade to acquire one, I'd be okay with that...
Looking forward to the game tonight. Guys should be feeling like they are playing for a job, getting closer to a healthy roster, and some decisions for the club.
If Hamhuis resigned here, I'd only want him back for 2 years, max, and sans ntc for the last half of the 2nd season. |
