Creating offense is the most overrated part of hockey in my mind. I'm all about creating defense. I'm talking about a biblical creation amount of defense. 6 days of creating defense, and on the 7th day...more defense. God clearly wasn't a hockey player -- hockey players don't rest when there are shots to be blocked.

Looking at Umberger, he's a guy that creates defense

Because there are many options. I just don't see the travesty of justice in not playing Weal that some folks here do.
- Scoob

The way I understand it, it's less about Weal, and more about giving something else a try.

The bottom six is getting reamed.

were they elite at the start or only because they won the war?
- 2Real

They were basically Joe Pavelskis. Our revolutionary patriots were all 7th round draft picks; British wouldn't give them the time of day, didn't believe they could become anything. But they had that eliteness in them all along. It was only when they won the war that everyone else realized it.

I think Jumbo Joe is the French King, Louis XVI, in this extended metaphor.

This to infinite if you're a dman. Take a look at players like Erik Karlsson or Brent Burns. Both put up a ton of points on defense but they're god damn awful in their own zone and do much more harm than good.

when the team is losing and has a real need for more speed and skill, I would like a different look. and when a team is playing a guy(s) who are basically ineffective, I would like to see someone else given a chance. if he bombs, then so be it.

too bad Sharp wasn't given a shot here. Not saying Weal is Sharp. not saying Weal or any of the prospects I want to see will be anything. I just would like to see kids given a shot

- nastyflyergirl

At some point, that time is going to come. Just a question of when.

As mentioned above: Cousins
- Scoob

Weal is a third round pick like Cousins. Undersized. But he's a year older, a quicker skater, and has had a bit more success. If you want Cousins to be given a shot, you should be just as eager to see Weal given his. Both could fail, both could succeed. You'll never know until you replace the dead weight that you know is failing and will fail. Plus Weal can't be sent up and down. He's on the roster for the season.

I like Cousins but his skating isn't a speedster. I think Weal is a better skater. Cousins is probably more aggressive.

But after the deadline I hope some dead weight is moved and places open up for some of our younger players. Unless the Phantoms are in a playoff race

- J35Bacher

phantoms being in a playoff race should not stop us from moving players on the flyers

Right. There are many options which is why I don't get the Weal crush.
- Scoob

Well, for one Weal is on the roster, can't be moved to the AHL without waivers. They seem unwilling to recall Cousins or Straka(who is now hurt) & already waived Gagner.

I think Weal played well last game. He showed decent speed & smarts, drew a penalty, had a couple scoring chances. He didn't look like a future star, but also did look like a horse pining to be glue.

If the Phantoms are in a playoff race I wouldn't want to just call up their best players and weaken them. I want to see the kids given a shot but a playoff race and playoffs, even in the AHL, would be beneficial to them over playing out the season with the Flyers.

Also the Phantoms could get guys like Abel-Kubel once his junior season is done.

NAK, Fazleev, Sanheim, Provorov, Myers, etc. could all get PTOs if their seasons end before the Phantoms/Flyers' seasons do.

My point, again, is that there are many options for change and when I see posters flipping out that Weal specifically isn't in the lineup I scratch my head in wonder because he's not "the answer" to any Flyers question. He's just a change, as would be Cousins or any of the other options. Some posters are acting like it's Gretzky not able to crack the lineup.

Yeah.

I am sorry. I thought the Phantoms were a little closer then where they are to the playoffs.
