Rasmussen 7th overall. Standards sure have changed.
Remember those days where they expected every big guy to be the next Eric Lindros?

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. Beginning in 1990-91, to be eligible for this award a player must not have attained his twenty-sixth birthday by September 15th of the season in which he is eligible. The latter fact was perhaps most prominent when in 1979–80, first-year phenom Wayne Gretzky was not eligible to win the Calder Trophy despite scoring 137 points (the previous rookie record at the time being 95), because he had played a full season in the World Hockey Association in 1978-79. The Toronto Maple Leafs lead all teams with nine players who've won the Calder.

Sauce? And what it comes down to then is, is the NHL considering the KHL a "Major Professional League"?

Has it really changed? Every power forward ranked in the top half of the first round is called the next lucic.

"In 1990, 31-year-old Sergei Makarov of the Calgary Flames became the oldest player to win the Calder. After that season, the rules for awarding the Calder were amended so that players are eligible only if they were 26 years old or younger by Sept. 15 of their rookie season.

I guess it hasn't because nobody comes to mind as "the new Lucic!"

IMO it depends on how McDavid does when he gets back. If he comes back and scores at a P/G pace again and finishes with 40-50 points he might win it. If McDavid has 50 points in 40 games and Jack has 60 in 82 I'm voting for McDavid if I'm on that committee.

Sabres sit in 27th with 44 points. Toronto, Edmonton, and Columbus are tied for last with 43. Philly in 24th has 48. If we're not careful, we might actually become respectable and miss out on the Finnish kids.

Looking at the list of potential free agents this year and I gotta say it actually looks pretty good. Alot of needs could be filled if we can offer attractive package (overpay). Would love to see us sign one of Goligoski, Russel, or Demres. and I think Backes could be the perfect veteran presence for this team. Could be a great fit

Malkin played over 25 in 3 seasons before being drafted in the NHL, but it was the "Russian Super League". It's still known as a professional league though, so not sure why he was eligible?

Gmtm will take care of that by hopefully getting picks/prospects for Leggy, CJ, McG, and hopefully Moulson. Heck, he might even trade for someone on IR again.

My point is, it has to be taken into consideration. Never said he shouldn't win it or should. But you have to take into account his games played as a professional (KHL) and his age, and playing with the best player in the NHL. That adds up, and pads stats. Again, not taking away anything from him. You have to be skilled to put up points like he is. But as far as the Calder goes, you have to take into consideration all of the above. Comparing an 18-19 year old kid vs a 24 year old with 5+ years of "pro" experience.

I really don't think that should matter

No one would be stupid enough to take Moulson off of our hands AND he has a NTC. I believe we're stuck with him.
I think I even remember him saying he signed the contract with us because he wanted to settle down somewhere with his family. Im sure the money didn't hurt either, but he was looking for stability.
I really wish he would just produce at an even somewhat reasonable rate and we wouldn't need to have this conversation.

I am convinced we got the better player in the McDavid/Eichel sweeps

I think McDavid will be plagued with injuries his whole career. He is tiny and plays a bit of a risky game. That may change after this injury. Did Pronger have the same injury as was never the same?

Just because he was in the KHL should not mean he should not win rookie of the year we should be grateful that a player of his skill chose our league I don't care if he played 7 or 10 years there lots of players come over from the Khl older and suck Richard

I disagree. Love Eichel's game, but there's a reason he went 2. McDavid has the extra part that separates the stars from the superstars. McDavid will be a superstar in this league. He got hurt by being driven into the board shoulder first while 2 players were on top of him. John Scott breaks a collarbone there.

I was tiny as a 19 year old. 3 years later I'm nearly 50 pounds heavier. He'll gain the weight, gain the muscle, and he'll be fine.

Lol. Sorry, the NHL is still far and away the premiere hockey league in the world and it isn't close. I don't, and won't, feel blessed that some Ruskie graces me with his presence. Unless your name is Mogilny or Ovechkin or Bure I'm not going to be grateful. You want to win in the best league in the world you come to the NHL. If not, have fun in Russia. You won't be missed.

And it does matter if you are in a professional league. The rookie of the year trophy is supposed to be exactly that, rookies. If you're playing Pro hockey at the highest level and then come to the NHL you aren't a rookie. You're a first year player in the league, but not a rookie. If he was in the AHL for 4 years and came up as a 24 year old doing this then sure, ROY. But in Russia, I don't agree with that.

Again i didnt say he should not win, you have to account all of the factors though. Its not all about point totals. It is who the most impressive rookie is. To me an 18-19 year old kid out of college, playing with scrubs. Compared to a 24 year old who has played 5 years of pro hockey and playing with the best hockey player in the world makes a huge difference. If YOU played on a line with Kane this year you would have 20 points. Playing barefoot with no stick.
