Do you think the leafs would make that one for one swap?
Dion can still play; though clearly doesn't have to be him. While not a true #1 imo the flyers need to bring in someone to help the process along while these young guys are filtered into the lineup. Having them on entry level deals will allow them to do that while hopefully one develops into that true #1 we all hope for. - rinaldo
Your going to have Del zotto to help with that and probably gudas.
There is one FA defenseman that would maybe interest me. Jason Demers is UFA this offseason.
I like Dion, just not sure I want to give up assets for him. ANd I actually think Toronto needs him as they are wanting to get younger. They will need someone to take the hard minutes. |

A player shouldn't have to pay any price. No one on the planet gives a (frank) about the all-star game. To suspend a player one game, along with their game check is absurd. |

I think all three anyway - jak521
It's (frank)ed up imo. How can the NHL legally do this? |

It's because of the fan voting.
If fans vote for these guys to see them and pay money to go to the game and events then they are expecting them to be there.

I don't want MDZ or gudas in that role. I want a legit 1A(very hard to find) or 1B.
I hear you with dion just using him as an example. Shattenkirk!!! |

So every fan that votes, spends money on the all-star game? It's absolutely comical for players to be suspended for a meaningful game, for missing a meaningless game. Totally asinine.
To play Devils advocate. what about the family with a couple of kids who saved money to go see Ovie, and Toews play in their teams game? Now their experience at the game won't be as good because they won't be playing. Someone might be driving from 4 hours away to see them. The NHL is cutting off their nose to spite their face by imposing a suspension. |

Oh, I agree. But if they do fine them one game's salary equivalent it's well worth it. |

It's probably in the CBA somewhere. And if it is, it's kind of an indication on how the players in general feel about the game. |

I would have liked to try and get Bogosian last year.
I like Del Zotto and Gudas as for next year. Not long term. I think Provorov will be our future number 1. Kind of like Keith.
If I were looking for a number 1 to trade for I would only give assets for certain players. Have to be young and need to be a certain type.
a guy like Gudbranson I would maybe use assets for. Or try to find a guy, ala Bogosian, who has the skills and intangiables to be a number one but might need a change or just hasn't developed yet for some reason. |

Trading strictly depends on the situation.
Who are we looking at trying to get via trade.
Would it be smarter to hold on to all of the d- prospects and build forwards through the pipelines as well?
If we are 3-4 years away from really making our next big push, We can develop our own forwards (sorta how Washington has done it). - jak521
Yeah -- I hear what you're saying. And I agree, the trade target would need to be right (for me, I'd look for more proven track-record than potential). I just think they're closer than 3-4 years out from fielding a legitimate contender.
With Hextall making some magic in getting out from VLC and only having a year left of Umberger (unless they buy him out in offseason for cap space), I think they can do some things to look to improve sooner rather than later.
Packaging one or two of those unproven prospects (maybe the tier-two guys -- Hagg, Friedman, Alt) or one of the tier-one prospects (Sanheim or Morin) for a bonafied top-six forward might help them win now and in the future.
I mean, the problem this season is scoring because there aren't really any pure shooters on the forward corps. And their need for a pure shooter is more evidenced by their inability to win in less emotion driven games (they struggle to get goals and offense against lesser opponents, but their emotion drives them to compete with greater opponents). Having a pure shooter in that top-six might help them rely less on emotion to win games. |

I agree totally. All-star games are complete waste of time. The fact MLB decides home field of the World Series on who wins an all-star is borderline criminal.

The NHL gets their collective panties in a wad because that All-Star weekend is to schmooze advertisers and sponsors.
It's why they were willing to die on the completely ridiculous, tone deaf hill of not having John Scott there, despite the fact he was voted in.
So, you see, the All-Star game isn't for "the fans". It's a terrible hockey game. Every hockey fan knows this.
It's all about the sponsors. That's why they are willing to crucify a player who is supposed to show up, but doesn't. |

He seemed a little dazed from the hit. But he's skating slowly to his bench with one hand on his stick. Maybe 4 feet from the linesman, he puts both hands on the stick and violently cross checks him. I'm not buying the temporary insanity plea. - jmatchett383
its was so strange....he took a step to the right making you think he was trying to avoid the linesman but then drove his stick/arms into his upper back. He is saying it was accidental. I think he would have faired better if he said he was stunned and didn't know where he was and what he was doing than saying whoops it was an accident. |

Another reason having the fans vote is a dumb idea. You have a farcical situation like John Scott get voted in.
I mean Scott must have the longest goal drought in the NHL right? |

I am not disagreeing. I think all the all-star stuff for sports is a joke. The NFL invites almost all it's players to pro bowls now.
There is no win win. They have these all- star games so cities can showcase a product and have the stars there. If your all-stars pull out then your not showcasing the best product or talent.
I would rather just give them a break. Prepare for the final stretch. I understand it from both sides. Fans want to see the stars and players want to rest.
Maybe the should have the top prospect game during the time instead of the all-star game. Fans can see the next draft class stars. I don't know what the right answer is. |

I only saw the one angle on the NHL network last night, but you can clearly see Wideman raise his head and appear to be looking directly at the linesman prior to the hit. He also clearly delivers a crosscheck, so it's pretty hard to buy that he ran into him accidentally or just didn't see him. - BiggE
as a person who has had a few concussions and also have dealt with a partner who had bad concussions, I can see losing your mind and doing that....but the thing is, that isn't his defense. his defense if I heard right is he is saying it was accidental. that was no accident . the NHL HAS to come down hard on him. you can't have a player hitting an official and coming up weak in discipline
speaking of hitting an official, anyone see Lucic punch the linesman in the face during a scrum? such a dope |
