Matthews is billed as a C/LW. We BADLY need LWs.
I get the restock the farm and I would understand if we could get a stud young DMan back in that trade to move back 2 or 3 spots. - JVince11
We badly needed wingers in general. We at least have one real LWer playing in the top 6 in Kane and have zero RWers besides Ennis. Girgensons and Reinhart were both drafted as centers. |

I think I'd like to see how Fasching does at the AHL level before I just pencil him in to my top 6. While I like what he's been able to do the last few years, there's been a lot of inconsistency in his game too. That's something he needs to work on a bit. - HonkFortheGoose
Is it possible his inconsistency last year was due to the situation at home with his family and that weighing heavily on him with him not getting paid while playing college hockey? |

That's been something he's dealt with for his entire life though. I'm sure it doesn't help any. But his inconsistencies go back to before last year. He fell significantly his draft year as well due to poor play. He's been wildly up and down since before he was even drafted.
I like him, so I don't want anyone to think that I'm being hypercritical, I'm just simply pointing out that I think he's going to need some AHL time. |

Nobody is saying if they were to get the #1 that Murray HAS to trade it. It's just a thought. Something to kick around. The conversation started yesterday as "Would it be a good idea?"
Like I said, I can see both sides of it. - HonkFortheGoose
I can see the side of trading the pick if the return is good enough, but with this draft, and the top 4-5 the way it is, I just don't see a big return coming with another team in the top 5 when they can and will think they can get a player just as good at 2, 3, or 4 without giving up anything.
Now, if a team around 20 wants that top pick, they would have to seriously ante up, but that said, if they did, it would basically be robbing peter to pay paul.
The only way I would trade with a team drafting around 20 is if I believe that team will be significantly worse next year and in line for a top 5 pick, and I can get them to give up their 2017 1st without it being top 5 protected. |

Why are you guys initially talking about trading the top draft pick if we were to win the lottery...
(Not htat we would after finishing dead last each of the past 2 years and not winning)
Besides McDavid and Eichel... Matthews would probably be the best young talent in the NHL from the draft recently. - JVince11
OEL/Risto would be a great foundation
if your building like the hawks, that is your keith/seabrook
ror, eichel, skunk, kane, girgens (that's 5 of your top 6)

Doesn't matter if they were drafted as Centers... they play where they are best at making the biggest impact. I like the options that Girgensons can play both.

"Zigomanis, the 64th overall pick by the Sabres in 1999, was once a touted center prospect. He thought he would be joining the organization in 2001 after signing his first professional contract.
Then one of the oddest incidents in franchise history took place.
The Sabres submitted Zigomanis’ contract to the NHL right at the deadline. But the fax machine malfunctioned, so the league didn’t receive the paperwork in time." |

What makes ANYONE think that PHX would trade OEL??? They just signed him long term... they have the young studs of Domi and DuClaire playing big minutes up right now.
Strome, Perlini, Dvorak, Dauphin, etc are coming soon too. OEL is their Risto to build around.... Why on Earth would they trade him? |

I would realllllly love to see Buffalo trade back into the late 1st round and get Alex DeBrincat. (He is going between 18-27 in most drafts)
Dude JUST F'N POTS GOALS!! He was great last year on the stacked team with McDavid, Strome, and Baptiste and he is great again this year without them. (I say without them because Strome and DeBrincat both play C on different lines)
62 pts in 38 games this year for Errie (35 goals)
104 pts in 68 games last year (51 goals)
He is only 5'7 so that is the big knock on him but look at how well Domi is doing.
We have 4 3rds and most likely a top 5 2nd round pick to move up 10 spots. Easy.
I think we need quality over quantity. |

Hudson Fasching update....
27 pts (15 goals) in 23 games for Minnesota.
I'd pencil him into our 2nd line RW right now if I were any of you.
With no big top 6 moves unless we draft a stud in that first 3 spots...
Kane - ROR - Reinhart
Girgensons - Eichel - Fasching
Would be my best guess.
Love to see a Puljujarvi/Matthews/Tkachuk/Laine in that top 6 though. - JVince11

The logic behind it, that I can see anyways, is that we don't need another center. If we were to win it, we could trade back by a pick or two (so still top 3) and draft one of the top wingers (which is much more of a need for us) while gaining something else as well, since you'd get more than just a 1 for 1 pick swap in this case.
You get to "restock" the farm a bit or add another piece that you need in addition to filling a more prominent need, all by just trading back a pick or two.
That's how the logic works for me anyway. Not sure that they would do that or anything. I wouldn't care if they didn't either. But I think that's how most people are coming to the conclusion that trading it may be the better option. - HonkFortheGoose
The dropoff, despite the professional opinion that Matthews is not a franchise player in the league of Eichel and McDavid, is like 1, 2-5, 6-15.
So, if Sabres win the lottery, they could really probably drop back up to 4-5 spots depending on their views on each of those first 5-6 players and pick up 2 top talents for one.
Based on current standings and need.
Winnipeg - 1st OA for Josh Morrissey and 6 OA. Matthews over Bryan Little.
Calgary - I don't really see a scenario that would make sense for them. If they see that Matthews or eventually Monahan could play wing, 1st OA for Hamilton and 5th OA. Wouldn't happen, but that would be close to a fair offer.
Toronto - 1st OA for JVR and Brendan Leipsic
Columbus - Here's a team that really makes sense. 1st OA for Ryan Murray and 2nd or Zach Werenski and Cam Atkinson
Edmonton - Doesn't make much sense.
Ottawa - 1st OA for Mike Hoffman, 7 OA

Just to note... the 5-8 range in most mock drafts is when ALL of the DMen start coming off the board. Nyland and Dubois after them.
Don't know if Chychrun, Sergachev, Fabbro, or Bean are at developmentally in terms of NHL ready or viewed as top pairing quality ceiling.

A player should progressively get better. Meaning that Larkin putting up those kind of numbers in his Freshman year is pretty damn good.
It's not a knock on Fasching at all. It's just a fact. |
