Benning just said they will draft BPA but are out here scouting three or four Dmen at this game. Their hope is to get a Dman with the first pick. He is looking to see how they react under pressure, and how well they move out of their own zone.

Ronning is a good little player. Golfing is right he would be a decent 3 Rd rd pick up

Name me a rusky #1 d-man. Ever. Markov? Only one I can think of and he's questionable.

Edit: I'm not trying to go full Don Cherry here, but I sure would like Canucks to continue to draft Canadians

Sergei Zubov comes to mind

That was a dumb comment. Gonchar was good in his day. A lot of Russians are decent starting back in the Summit series.

Konstantinov before he died on the bench...fetisov one of the all time great defenceman in the world. Lots of top end Russian d men

At the prospects game Benning says:

'we're getting deeper prospect-wise at forward time to start looking at some D'

That shot was deflected. He looked nervous in the first. I think honk that the team that drafts him with high hopes is going to be let down.

How about drafting Lucas Johansen in the 4 th and hoping his brother wants to play with him when he hits UFA

I wouldn't take a job up north. No way.

I thought about it at the time. It was a 6 figure job that included lodging and food expenses. Basically you banked all that you earned. It also included 3 flights out a year to anywhere in NA. My problem is that it was a 3 year contract.

There's this Konstantinov character, finished 2nd in Norris voting. Might have won one later had he kept playing.

that the same character who was #2 to Lidstrom?
Solid player.
Good skating from Chychrun, not great passing.

What does that have to do with it? Second best is damn good

Face it we will have Sergachev , Pedan and Tryamkin on our back end

Well I did ask if there was a russian #1, that was what he was responding to so it seems fairly relevant. They [layed on the same team after all

Umm, no he wasn't.

He finished 2nd in Norris voting, he was #1 on their team. He was in a car crash afterwards.....

I'll start facing it when Sergachev is noticable in this game and is ranked by scouts as something other than the 4th or 5th best d-man in the draft

Larry Murphy and Lidstrom were both on that team, and were famously the d tandem deployed against the legion of doom in the STCF that year. He won the "=/-" award and was one heck of a d-man, probably the best example of a russian #1 but debatable whether he was given the other players on his team but did indeed finish 2nd to leetch.

You can replace famously with surprisingly. Regardless, he finished 2nd in the league Norris voting behind Brian Leetch in his final season. Not bad for a guy that had only started playing D late in his career.

Whereas Lidstrom emerged as the guy we know today, Konstantinov and his partner Fetisov ( who probably also could have been a #1 in his youth) were the premier pairing. Like it or not, the Russian Five was the Wings best line. They were simply amazing.
