i would have taken this or the two top-5 draft picks that would follow from trading our best d-man and really starting to pumpkin.

I thought Cap Space was gonna suit up for Edler.

Now that's an intelligent comment.

Were going to trade our non-existent assets to a team for a 1/2 defenseman that in unavailable (as they almost never get traded), Which means we've probably traded our top-5 pick and have aquired apparently not much because Edler is not good. I think Spock would be proud of this logic.

You deserve all the credit. You said we'd be better off with cap space.

Edler is one player of 750 or so in the NHL. If we traded him for say a first , and roster capable dman of lesser value. Say 2-3 mil a season. That's 2 mil cap saving added to our what ? Projected 18 mil we will have for next season. Do none of you see how the bulk of the defence could be rebuilt into a much better unit with several first round picks and 20 mil in spending money? It's really not rocket science.

yes they did, two years later after Gretzky beat them in the first round the year before and they changed the personnel and style of game as a response. Which is what I said in my post.

Come on. You make it sound like the team was completely different.

1988 Scoring Leaders:
Wayne Gretzky
Mark Messier
Jari Kurri
Esa Tikkanen
Glenn Anderson

1990 Scoring leaders:
Mark Messier
Jari Kurri
Glenn Anderson
Esa Tikkanen
Craig Simpson

Not a huge change in personnel.

If Edler is as brutal as you claim nobody is going to give us anything for him.

How could he possibly fetch a first? You're right, I'm no rocket scientist, but if he's as bad as you say he is, seems we're not going to get much back let alone a first rounder.

When we look at 5 out of 23, I'd have to agree. It's a team game, Edmonton had a lot of great players at that point. What I was trying to point out is that you can't "replace" a gretzky any more than you can a Toews or Kane.

Look how many of you think he's great. Someone else is bound to think so too. I don't care. Could build a better d with the 20 mil

Yes, I would imagine there would be somewhere in the range or 28-29 GMs's thinking he can play top 4.

How do we build a better d-corp with the 20 mil? Throw some FA signings at me, I just want to know how you see this going down.

Ok that's what she was trying to express.

I was looking at this conversation here and thought hell no, I will see what the wife is talking about she said pigary. I asked her 15 times to repeat it , because of her accent. I asked her to spell it.

I asked what it was she said raising pigs on a farm .

So here I am back here, how bout that Gretzky guy

I was going to pipe-in a page or two ago and say I think you guys are arguing semantics.

Of course Gretzky is not replaceable in the literal sense but I think the other person was saying that a team can lose a Gretzky, Toews, Kane, or Crosby and still find success even as short as a season or two later. One player doesn't make a whole team. So in a figurative sense any one player can be replaced.

Sure guys are replaceable, but if you aren't getting much of a return you'll be hard pressed to do so unless you have guys ready to step in. In our case, we're void of top 4 D and top line forwards in the cupboard.

How many after they traded Gretzky?
- A_SteamingLombardi

We know the oilers won another after the trade.....the question was how many did the oilers win after the trade and how many did Gretzky win on any team after that. Neem doesn't want to answer it because it shows my exact point. Everyone is replaceable.
