He's sorta okay. - jmatchett383
Can't really see it, but he was tripped right before this play and still managed to get up and beat everyone up ice. He's so god damn good. |

Is he better than Nick Schultz? Because he's played 1000+ games which means he's currently a great defenseman. |

I had excellent beer and wings last night. good luck getting a rise out of me today
@Marc D - the wings were from the Keswick Tavern that I suggested you should go to whenever you are in town for that show at that place - funmaster18
Try the wings at union jacks its about 5 minutes down the road from Keswick. The blue comet is a cool bar also. |

Exactly this, brotato chip
The cap space argument is a cop out. I thought that way but have seen the light. You cannot tell me that a player should be traded 3 years before you see any real cap relief as a reason for a trade - YuenglingJagr
It was a flat out bad trade. Horrible. I'd gladly take Hartnell's scoring, levity, grit, leadership, and other intangibles back along with his cap hit and duration.
The signs were there on Umberger. Getting scratched regularly for underperforming on a bad Columbus team? That should have been a huge red flag.
Hartnell was (and still is in Columbus) a productive glue guy. At this juncture, Umberger is a guy you can replace with an AHL call-up. He is a stanp-up guy and the current reality may not be his fault. He was never fast and injuries have taken their toll on him. The reality at this point, however, is that Umberger is an overpaid mucker/grinder. Colin McDonald could come in and do the same thing at a better market value. |

I have never been to either, but know a few people that have. Not sure why I've never gone, but thanks for the suggestion |

I will admit I would probably not being saying this if he weren't still producing at a great clip. But the age is really the reason that I dont care that the deal happened. It is what it is so I will be happy with the cap space, but on the ice it has gone about as bad as possible - YuenglingJagr
So what would having Hartnell done?
Probably no provorov because we might have been some points higher in the draft. Maybe no koencney then because they might have taken a forward if they missed on provorov.
See there is a ripple effect.
I'll wait until Umberger is gone and then see what happens with the extra money and roster space. |

You're over estimating the value Hartnell had at age 32 with five years left on his contract. - Feanor
He was traded for a guy who was going to be bought out...his value was under estimated |

Awesome.
Columbus is last in the league and Flyers are actually pushing for a playoff spot and still rebuilding for the future at the same time.

I would be surprised if and Konecny aren't on the team next year. Morin and Sanheim likely start in AHL. I would like to see Weal and Alt get looks this season. |

Maybe Giroux gets hurt and we pick McDavid? Hartnell would've at least made the last two years more interesting from my perspective. The point is I think we got horrible value on a trade and there are better ways to clear cap space...this could be the part where he turns from Hextall the Grey to Hextall the White though. |

Konecny will have to develop physically before he takes on the NHL for a year. Hope it happens quickly! |

He's so fast and so good right now. He can help the bottom 6 next season.
Flyers are really just 2 good forwards from making the playoffs. I think Hexy can do some creative things this summer if he wants to trade for young talent, trade for more picks and/or move some money to create cap space. It'll be the first summer where he doesn't really have his hands tied. |

Here is what I think Hextall was thinking.
A 32 year old power forward who plays a top 6 roll. 5 years left on his deal. What are the chances he continues to produce at a high level? If he does stop to produce, then where does he fit? Doesn't kill penalties. Not a strong defensive player. Not a terrific skater. Has a full NTC so he has say to where he wants to go.
In RJ I might be getting a roll player with 2 less years on his deal. This team isn't ready to compete for another couple years so I can handle a bottom 6 roll player. Hopefully he can chip in some scoring and also allows for young players to get a couple seasons in the AHL. Also lets guys like Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds take on a more prominate roll with the team.
Yes. They haven't got the production they wanted from Umberger. But Hextall was playing the odds.
